Format for Loading Pic

Postby Yurbuh Tuggly » Sat Dec 31, 2011 4:06 am

The loading.bmp (and the exiting.bmp which is often ignored depending on your iGo/Primo version, but you can replace that too, if you like) can be three different places. Depending on a number of factors, it may be necessary to replace all of them (assuming all 3 locations exist on your file system).
1) inside data.zip.....ui_igo8 (for iGo 8x)\ ui_igo9 (for Primo)\{system_resolution}\loading.bmp
2) inside branding.zip (same location as above), and also in {system_resolution}\skin_night\loading.bmp
3) If your system has a ui_igo{8 or 9} folder in the main folder root, then same locations as above.

Basically, you want to replace loading.bmp in ALL the locations it can be found, so that there is no chance any other than the one you want is used.
Be careful when dealing with data.zip and branding.zip files not to completely decompress them, make changes, and then re-zip them. This may render them useless and unable to be read by iGo/Primo. Only work with such files within Winrar by using drag/drop within the Winrar interface. That way, the integrity of the archive is preserved so that iGo/Primo can use it.

Sometimes (not always) it may also be necessary to delete the Save folder after making changes in order for those changes to be seen.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

Thank you for your reply. Here are some questions then:

Assuming the file (loading.bmp) exists in other locations in branding.zip, since I didn't touch those, wouldn't the original file then show up if the one I did change doesn't?

I just checked and the loading.bmp as the original file doesn't exist anywhere else in branding.zip. I'll check the other directories...

Data.zip does have a loading.bmp in there but I can't read it with any program I have and it's a 390kb file far from what the other one 1.1MB file is. That's the only one.

When you say drag/drop in WinRar, you mean don't use the Add File?

Thank you for your help!

Yes, probably. If you got no loading screen (picture) at all, it means either something is wrong with your custom loading.bmp, OR you destroyed the *.zip file by unzipping/rezipping.

You don't have to, no. You can just drag the file from your desktop, etc into the folder being displayed in Winrar. If asked whether to overwrite (depending on your Winrar global settings), say "Yes".

For experimentation purposes, try the one attached. It is correct in dimension, color depth, formatting, etc.
If it works, you know you are doing it right, but the image you made is flawed somehow.

Unzip it on your PC, then try to insert it where you want.

PS. A correctly done loading.bmp for 800x480 will ALWAYS be exactly 1.09 MB.

I examined a backup of iGO8 i have, and it appears that the loading.bmp in the data.zip is in compressed format, while the loading.bmp in the branding.zip is not compressed...

To convert between compressed and decompressed i use [Please Register or Login to download file]

If you still get the default startup screen instead of your screen try replacing the screen in the data.zip, but use the tool to compress it first.

Open the bmp image and save as iPAQ 31X/iGO (RLE Bitmap)

First of all, thank you all for your help!!

What happened was a series of issues that I'm still trying to understand but basically here is what I found.

1) Trying to edit a pic on a Mac and then bringing it to the Dark Side causes some issues with the image that something as delicate as iGo or WinCE just can't cope with. It's not a little/big endian issue but it's there (like the branding.ini file is a different size when opened with Notepad than with Text Edit). Not sure if that has an impact but since there's really nothing in there but a web site or other. But small inconsistencies that made for a 2.4KB difference in total file size.

2) VuePrint caused a lot of grief by not overriding the existing image so I abandoned it for WinRar.

3) I'm not sure whether the dpi count has any impact on it because VuePrint showed 160dpi whilst I had set it to 96dpi.

4) Once I had Yubuh's image working, I went back and got my image, scaled it and using WinRar replaced it and it worked.

Again, thank you so much for your help and Happy New Year from 66 degrees North and -40F

That would make it... -40C as -40F is where the scale intersect. And no, 5C is not complaining temperature, it is still swimming weather, T-shirts, a little UV cream and the wife is NOT allowed in the boiler room... :) We hope for more snow as temps will dip to -60F and below in Jan/Feb.

BTW where are you located "globally"?

Again thank you!
