Old TomTom XL questions

Postby rcambra » Mon May 01, 2023 12:18 am

Hi guys. Just have some questions about this old TomTom XL GPS I'm still using. Lately it has been very handy for my job (part time truck driver - local streets, not interstate). It has gotten me to 99% of the places I have had to go, but having an old set of Australian maps/map data from when I purchased it (sometime arouind 2008), I have had to rely on my phone for the last kilometer/closest street or address if you understand. What I'm asking is, can this device be updated with current Australian street map data or not? I don't want to get rid of this GPS as it's still really useful - just needs updated maps. The other small issue is the original battery is pretty much dying because I can't set the clock - the unit won't keep the time when turned off or while I'm using it - in that respect I've found a replacement battery which I can purchase and install at a later date. (EDIT - have just viewed a video on how to update the device to fix the time issue)
Other question is, can the internal storage be upgraded or am I stuck with it (I think the card is a 1GB memory card)? I'm not too worried about the internal storage card size if I can get current map data to fit onto it. As below, this is all the information I've taken from the unit - both from the software and TomTom Home and the still relevant stickers attached to the unit. Any help would be really, really appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Information from software when device is on:-
Device AKSZC CSD6J
App 8.010 (9369/080529) OS: 190943
32 MB RAM (free: 6.9 MB)
GPS v1.21, Boot 5.5011
Map: 'Australia' v925.5409
Language: English UK

Information on sticker on back of device:-
S/N : RH2288G03981
8EG0.025.00.7.52

Information on sticker on bottom of device:-
TomTom XL

Yes, you can update it to the latest Australian map which is only 202MB so it'll easily fit on the 1GB internal storage.

You can download Australia_1105_11759 from here

Once I've downloaded the map and extracted it to the root of the TomTom, do I change the folder name i.e in the archive
it's called Australia_1105_11759 so would it still be called that on the TomTom or do I rename it Australia (my backup I made earlier with Windows Explorer has it named Australia.) Could you shed some light on this please fredderf? Thanks in advance.

Yes, rename it to Australia if you like...just as long as there's no spaces in the name, it'll still say Australia 1105.11759 in the map list

Hey again fredderf. Thanks for getting back to me. I am still wondering if I can use the other maps on the forum, specifically any of the maps greater than 'Australia 1105.11759' or are they not suitable for my device? Could you shed some more light on this please. Thanks in advance!!

The map needs to be compatible with your device's navcore (operating system) 8.010...the only one which is suitable for Australia is 1105.11759

Hi again fredderf. Okay, so I’ve now updated the navcore on this device of mine. Currently on version 9.510.1234792.1 - used downunder35m’s Universal Navcore Installer to update the device. Once I did that I rebooted the device and checked all was well (this is before I did the map update) - successful navcore update from 8.010 to current 9.510. I then proceeded to update the map data with your recommendation. Used Fastactivate to generate a new meta.txt and map patch, then copied all needed files onto device with Windows Explorer. Again rebooted, all successful. So now, couple more questions for you. Can I do a further navcore update and newer map, or just a newer map now that I’ve got version 9.510 navcore? Again with shedding light on the subject. Really have appreciated your help these last few conversations. Chat with me soon.

The 1105 series of maps are the latest available. What is available with the newer navcore is different versions of the same maps that have more features...see the tutorial linked below but pay attention to the bit that mentions limited RAM models becoming unstable when using fully featured maps:

Hi again fredderf. Mate, just wanted to thank you for all your help with this old GPS unit of mine. I've updated the unit with this map (Australia_1105_11799) and relevant meta.txt, used FastActivate to successfully patch maps, restarted unit, all goes like a rocket here now. Would like to thank you a million times through this forum, but not sure how... hahaha
All the best!!

Re: Old TomTom XL questions

Hi again guys. Had some great help from Fredderf a while back about this old TomTom XL I’m still using. All still going great with updated navcore (I’m using the universal 9.510 navcore courtesy of downunder35m with latest map for Australia) - so my next question is I would like to wipe the internal storage clean and start fresh (I just did an overwrite of the original navcore but made a backup beforehand just in case)
So that question is, can I do a complete wipe of the internal storage and install the universal navcore and then set about getting a updated map put on the device and what steps do I have to take? Do I need TomTom Home for the process or not? As I’ve mentioned I’ve got the original navcore and map backed up and I’m wanting to do this purely for cosmetic reasons i.e not have so many superfluous files on the internal storage (only 1GB so limited with map updates - not about to try that SD card soldering trick I’ve seen). Also would any one have an updated link to downunder35m’s universal navcore installer? I’ve got a copy but think it might be corrupted. Again Fredderf, or anyone, could you guys point me in the right direction. Would be very much appreciated.

As long as you have all the files/folders etc (apart from old map folders) copied from your internal across to your SD card then just leave the internal alone.

Hi again biggerdave and fredderf. Got one more request / question. With this particular model of TomTom I have, is there a wiring diagram to add an SD card slot/reader to it as I would like to be able to use a truck map. Being a truck driver for the company I work for they send me to some crazy pickup points from time to time. The standard car map I'm using is great - thing is I have to be mindful of what streets to take as the truck I drive is 3.6m high and I find myself having to dodge trees/power poles etc.
I'm not willing just yet to purchase a truck nav device, just would like to have the capability to use a truck map when necessary. Could you guys shed some light on this please. Many thanks!!

You'll need to google "Adding extra internal memory tomtom" then you'll find some useful links with instructions & pics
Good luck

Hi again bloody excellent Navitotallers.... Next problem(s). Haven't worked out trying to add larger external storage to this old TomTom XL of mine - could be impossible, would like further thoughts on this from you guys if you have any. So now I've updated the map - currently using 'Australia_1120_12101' with updated meta code and map patch - seems to be all good so far. Have also managed to put onto this device 'Australia_TRUCK_1110_11881' and updated the meta code for it and patched the map. Problem is, the TRUCK map cannot be selected when you use the 'Switch Maps' function on the device - does not show up on the screen/picker. Could anybody possibly have a solution for switching maps? Is there a step I missed when I copied the map across and did the relevant meta and patch? Have to add, I have about 5 megabytes of space left on the device - not sure if that's the issue. If I have to choose which map to use and only that map, that's fine with me. Can't have all the cake and eat it too haha... Any help would be greatly appreciated again. Many thanks!!!

There's not a lot of point trying to increase the storage capacity of an old XL when you could buy a better device on eBay that has an SD card slot built in very cheaply.

The Australia Truck map won't work because it is used on a newer generation of device than you have...it's incompatible
