BMW Navigator VI – USB Module Failure, Unable to Update Maps

Wed Jun 10, 2026 4:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with my BMW Navigator VI GPS. The USB module has failed, so the device can no longer connect to a PC and it also won't charge through the USB port. At the moment, it can only charge when mounted on the motorcycle cradle.

I've taken it to a few local repair technicians, but unfortunately none of them have been able to repair or replace the USB module.

My main concern is map updates. Since the Navigator VI cannot be recognized by a computer, is there any alternative way to install or update maps on the device? through sd card or any other way? Has anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Contact customer support at Garmin, they seem to be quite supportive for providing Nav VI replacement units as problems with the device are common. (even outside normal warranty period)

That's good to hear.
gpsvagg was sorted out last month via PM's as it involved his garmindevice.xml and it's not something you should share publicly.
Here is a snapshot of the solution given.

Hi,
the maps on the SD card should be displayed in My Maps, no need to touch the files on the device.
if the 3D map does not show up or the old 1 is displayed you can rename the gmap3d.img gmap3d.unl gmap3d.gma on the SD card to gmap3d1.img gmap3d1.img gmap3d1.img

Regards

GN

Hello GN I just download the files, thank you for your help! Do I need to do any action for the files that are already in the device local memory? or it will automatically read the maps from the SD?

Kind regards

Hi,
Below is a link to the garmindevice.xml of your device. "Clone"
On a FAT32 formatted SD card create a folder called Garmin and place the garmindevice.xml in it.
Use Garmin Express to update the maps of Europe.
Once you have completed the download you will have to arrange and rename the files as the image below.
