For some reason the original shell is not being killed, The problem with MobileNavigator device shell's is they want to be on top of certain windows, and SystemInformation/Mortscript windows are included in that list. Without having the device in front of me it's hard to diagnose why it's not being killed, I'll work on some additional instructions for you...

I appreciate the difficulty in not having the device to hand. Are we sure the original shell is jbshello as there are 12 other items listed in task manager, is it possibly one of those instead?

Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:02 pm

As JBSHello.exe is listed i would say that has to be the shell, Items like NK.exe, Device.exe, Shell.exe, Gwes.exe, Filesys.exe, Services.exe and explorer.exe are windows processes and will crash the device if killed. same as items like Gpsmc.exe etc which are 3rd party processes.

I think it might be an environment variable problem, Mortscript doesn't look in the app directory, When i get five minutes, i'll write a couple of lines to copy Toolhelp.dll into the windows directory.

Thanks Fatboyfun whatever you did worked. I can now start US, looks a nice bit of kit, some apps not working as follows:
Can only get volume control to close by tapping Mute button.
Nothing happens when keyboard icon tapped.
Media player error codec (avc aka H.264) not supported, then crashes to US.
Notepad crashes when attempting to open file, freezes reboot required.
Is it possible to get these items functional on my device.

The volume closes by itself, that's how it is.

Try going into advanced settings and changing the keyboard to the alternative sip as your device may not have one installed.

The media player I included was the only one that worked on every device I tested, there are others but compatibility was an issue.

The notepad issue may be related to the keyboard, as it's opened when notepad is opened.

I'll have a play around with some alternative apps.

1. Volume control panel. Will not close by itself.
2. Keyboard Icon. I have device keyboard, as it opens OK in Notepad.
3. Core Player. I found if I removed an mp4 file on the device, it will sometimes run.
4. Notepad. Tried using alternative keypad, still freezes.
5. US Exit Icon. This is a new problem, brings up US error the selected app does not exist (Windows)
Any ideas?

Let me just clarify a couple of things.

The keyboard icon on the main screen does nothing, but the keyboard opens when notepad is started.
Notepad freezes the device, Any error message?
Did you set an exit app? (On my Binatone i set it to \Windows\JBSHello.exe so the original shell restarts.)
TCPMP (Coreplayer) plays everything except H264?

------------------------------

The keyboard icon on the main screen opens the keyboard in a different way to the way notepad (and some others) opens it, May be a device specific problem with the main screen icon app, I can do it another way.

Everything works under WinCE 6 emulation and on the few WinCE 6 devices i've tested on (I don't own any myself ), I'll look into an alternative app set.

In order of asking:
Correct.
No.
No, as default Windows.
Have only tried MP3, had mp4 on device which was causing the error, but will fatal error sometimes.
Thank you again for your time.

Fatboyfun, something else I should mention in case it is relevant. When I shut down US which I can only do by pressing the top left power button, I see the original device sleep/shutdown menu, is it the same on your Binatone?

Yes and you will see the same low power warning screen ss well

Dear Friend:
I have the Magellan Maestro 4700. The problem is that the flash memory was apparently erased, so the exact copy of another Maestro 4700 has been downloaded & installed. Now it doesn't recognized the map, showing just empty view with a car on it. Any help? Will the universal shell work on it? Is there any Magellan activation patch/programm similar the one for TomTom?
Thank You

There's probably some copy protection somewhere to stop you from doing that, If you no longer have/never had the original recovery discs then there's not a lot you can do to recover the original software, however with a bit of work, running other software is usually possible
