As you can see I am new to this so please be patient :tease: I have had trouble locating the maps on my Garmin Nuvi 1390 until today :023: here is how you find them :-
1: Connect the Garmin to the PC
2: Go to my Computer and double click on Garmin
3: Top left hand ...

Here the simplest solution to unlock Garmin maps.

Protected toolkit_2254_x86 or Garmin Garmin file toolkit_2254_x64

Just open the system that matches your application.
Drag the locked map into the blank window.
Wait a few seconds to gather information.
It will report if locked.
In that case click on "Unlock File"

Image version
Garmin map image is standard version for all Garmin devices and software solutions for other mobile devices. File extension is always .img, path and file name depends on device and function of the image, look >>>here.
NOTE: Garmin *.img files are no CD/DVD images! They are not compatible with well known image burning programs!

MapSource, CD/DVD, PC or gmap version
These are all names for map versions, which has to be installed on ...

I haven't tried this with WinCE 6 but it might work.

1. Download my program from http://www.navitotal.com/showthread.php?1274-Garmin-Mobile-XT-for-WinCE5.0-program
2. Using Winrar, extract the folder to your SD card.
2a. Start the program.
3. Choose "connect to a Garmin device."
4. "Skip" scanning attached.
5. Choose yes to skip.
6. Choose I agree.
7. Choose no to connect to other Garmin devices.
8. Click arrow on lower left.
9. Click "wrench icon" - tools.

step by step tutorial for replacing internal map on nuvi 1xxx, 2xxx and 3xxx

1. in hidden folder \.System\ delete the files gmapprom.img, gmapprom.unl and gmapprom.sum after backup on PC
   
   
2. download new unlocked image version (normal NT for 1xxx, Unicode for 2xxx and 3xxx) and copy it after extraction (gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img) to folder \.System\ - if it's named gmapsupp.img rename it to gmapprom.img (take care for exactly right name)
   
   
3. replace *.jcv in ...

How to easily search NAVETEQ maps for, address or (POIs)

1. http://www.navteq.com/
2. Select: Map Highlights
3. Select: NAVETEQ Points of interest (POIs)
4. Unit-System: Imperial
5. Define a radius within POIs shall be displayed: 50 mi
6. Please enter the location you want to set as center point for the search:
Address, Zip, City, POI : Cuernavaca, Mexico
7. Choose which POIs you’d like to see on the map: Restaurant
8. Select: Go

Use MapSource & GMAP anywhere

You can use Mapsource and gmap folders easy from anywhere
1. just copy mapsource.exe (and maybe your language file) to eg. your USB drive :\Mapsource
2. make directory :\Mapsource\Maps
3. copy all GMAP folder to this Maps directory and run :\Mapsource\mapsource.exe

( You can use any directory just make Maps folder to same directory with mapsource.exe )

this way you not need copy all your maps to %APPDATA%
