I have the same Orion control panel in mine, I never needed to use it.

Does it see anything, even just one satellite?

Might be worth opening it up to see if the antennae wire has come off.

At this point it does not see anything.
At this moment is unscrewed outside in harsh daylight conditions with power on and Primo2 loaded... ;-)

Okay, opened it up for three quarters. Bottom part I did not succeed in detaching...

I see wires to battery and speaker.
I do not see antennae wire for gps.

Is the 'rubbery' square part on top of the Spirit the GPS unit?

I would say so, on some devices there is a thin black wire that runs to it, that has tiny little plugs on each end, similar to the wifi antennas in laptops, I have known them to become detached resulting in loss of GPS signal.

It looks like that one is directly connected to the board, check the connection for bad solder joints, unseated edge connector etc.

It looks clean and dry and its screws are fine.
What you would expect from a not-that-old device which did not go head down in some toilet... ;-)

I add some pictures from the WinCE Orion prog. Perhaps it will give you some insight.

As stated before, I played around with a few setting but, obviously, to no avail.

If not, I'm giving up and will be returning it to its rightful owner. Sigh !

On another matter: I installed map updates yesterday on Primo2 and they are working fine (apart from GPS making all useless) but I can only find Netherlands EXTENDED POI not 'regular' POI.
When I seek for a hospital in Rotterdam it only shows me hospitals in Belgium. Not one in the Netherlands.

If the device was working properly, would I need to fish up some older Netherlands 'regular' POI ?
It did show some other Dutch POI, which, logically, should come from the extended POI file.

To use the extended poi, you must have the normal poi, it doesn't have to be from the same release, ie, you can use Q2 poi and Q3 extended poi, We have the same problem in the UK.

But it looks like hardware has failed here, particularity if it just "stopped working" in normal use.

Okay Fatboyfun (I never thought I would speak to a man in this manner), thank you for your counsel and tutorials.

In a way they did their job but what can a man do if hardware fails to perform? :)

By the way, is there a way to relock the device in case I should want to reinstall the original Mio software?
I did make a backup.

Mon Mar 18, 2013 3:49 pm

If you have a complete backup then just erase everything and reload the backup.

Mon Mar 18, 2013 4:32 pm

Yeah, I guess that would do the trick.
This whole business of unlocking and WinCE underneath the navigation software makes me a bit nervous.
I just compared the backup with the current content and the difference is really only the Primo and Unlock files.

The only thing to watch out for is hidden/system files, Windows hides these by default, so make sure you turn on the options to view them before making the backup
