TomTom Go 710 Map upgrade by a newbie

Postby SorenS » Wed Jun 06, 2018 10:48 pm

Hi
Well I happened to come across an old TomTom Go 710 (2006). I've never used a gps in my car and I thought I could give it a try. It has Navcore 6.110 and tt Home states that this device is no longer supported by tomtom (lifelong free update!). I know this gps has not been upgraded since it was bought in june 2006. Can't see the date of the map of Western Europe but there is a file (.pna) which contains this info in Notepad :
ID=Western_Europe.pna
825045440
650
build=1047
id=38915

Is this version 825.xxxxxx - my guess!

I managed to download a newer navcore 7.903 (navcore_7.903.9183.go510-go710.cab extracted by IZarc), and used a 2Gb SD (formatted Fat32 in winXP) instead of the original 1 Gb SD, moved some files back (?) and ran FastActivate. And lastly I moved the old Western Europe map back. I had to make a reset (little hole on the back) and it all worked perfectly well. Fantastic! Since I'm not (at this stage) interested in all new and fancy features I'm satisfied with this upgrade. But a 12 year old map seems a little obsolete and now I've got stuck! I think I've registered everywhere, scanned a lot of threads, read a lot of tutorials and I will soon be 73 years old. This is too much for an old man!
At Navitotal.com I finally found compatibility chart for Map/Navcore and it seems I can use map 965.7252,7280,7281,7282 or 966.7376,7404,7443 and since I earlier downloaded from PirateBay 971.7669 this one is also OK. Sadly the download from PirateBay which included WesternEuropeMap, Fastactivate and some crack-file was unsuccessful (regarding the crack-file which seemed to be banned!). At Navitotal there were links to download through some site which linked to FileFactory. Impossible!!! What is this? A dead end?
OK I will calm down!
It would be MUCH aprecciated if I could get some help with this.

Your current map version shows as 650.1047 which is indeed quite old!
There is full info on how to do this, on quite a few threads.

But to break it down in the fewest steps: (COPY & PASTED FROM MY QUICK NOTES)!
Always backup before modifying so you can go back if anything goes wrong.
NOTE: If using an SD Card then replace the word "DEVICE" with SD Card!
Before starting, format the DEVICE to FAT32
1. Install Navcore 9.510 to your DEVICE - (Choose a 32mb version from the available Universal Installer)
2. Download a v1005 map that has an available meta and copy it to your DEVICE (having a meta basically means that it is able to be activated). eg. Western Europe 1005.8823.
3. Download and copy FastActivate to your DEVICE.
If using the SD Card method then insert it back into your Tomtom at this point.
4. Turn the Tomtom on and wait for it to boot and tell you the map is not compatible (We do this so it can generate a file called "ttgo.bif" on your DEVICE which is required for FastActivate to work correctly).
5. Turn your Tomtom off and connect your DEVICE to PC
6. Run FastActivate from DEVICE and choose option "2" - Once completed, press any key and then choose "Quit".
7. Reinsert SD Card (If used) and turn your Tomtom on.
8. DONE - You now have the most compatible Navcore with the newest Map!

Some things to consider:
The map links are available via navitotal but they are on free hosting sites which splits the files (The links DO work!) If they weren't on free sites then someone would need to pay for them to be hosted - so jumping through a few hoops to get them saves us all loads of £££'s.
The newer the map, generally the bigger it is and the current Western Europe 1005.8823 is pretty much 2GB so a bigger SD Card will be needed (unless you delete the "crpoi.dat" and "poi.dat" files then the Map and Navcore should fit on a 2GB SD Card - you lose the built in POIs though).
Some devices bootloaders are not able to correctly handle cards over 2GB so the bootloader will need to be updated to v5.5128 for it to recognise the card - there is a thread you should read if you need to do this as not all devices can be updated!

I hope this helps!

1) Make a backup of your Device and delete the map.

2) For the moment stick to Scandinavia.
Download
Scandinavia 1005_8819
noref.php?url=http://relink.to/f/87a8e124c4508f24b1187e38876344

Unpack and Copie the chosen map to your Device in his own folder.
If you open the map you see the individual files and probably a folder (brand).
Not a map in a map.
3) Use FastActivate download and unpack
viewtopic.php?f=127&t=19452
Copy "FastActivate.exe"
to your TomTom device in the root
Run "FastActivate.exe".
Select
1 (update meta)
2 (activate map)
3 (patch navcore) till the message
OK System patched.
Done

UK Maps are only good if traveling there!

OP already stated they started with WE and it seems they were just looking for a newer one.

Hi
Many good advice ' - thanks!
I've downloaded 'Scandinavia 1005_8819'-map alright.
I've downloaded 'rider nc 9.510installer1.1.exe' from Zippyshare but I can't extract it without password.
And it's not 'navitotal' and all the other I've tried.
Hm?
