How can we know the size of the maps?

You can get idea of the map sizes by looking in the previous 950 maps.
But maps do tend to grow in some moderate extend each quarter.

Another way is to click the map you want and you can see the total download size on the linkcrypt page.

Another question: I tried to download Europe 1GB South 955 6801, but the file server file factory says that "SERVER LOAD TOO HIGH" since yesterday. Is it a bug, a dead link or something else?

One might consider downloading from an alternative source in the 955 Map Collections topic.
Zippyshare downloads are pretty fast and easy.
