Why not use torrents?

Postby Fatboyfun » Fri Apr 15, 2011 5:46 pm

I was using peerblock, It used to download at full speed, then someone flicked a switch somewhere and bang, dial-up speeds! Tried everything even re-installing windows, Just doesn't work anymore, Even frostwire is crippled  HTTP downloads are fine though

Be careful with peerblock ;)
Depending on the tracker used you have to allow Http transfers or you won't get any speed, same goes for the Donkey network.
Peerblock has several IP's stored that are used for the traffic exchange in P2P networks.
It depends what lists you use of course.

I realised my ISP is throtteling my P2P traffic every now and to make sure there is enough bandwidth for everyone.
If all goes wrong you can still try to use port 80 and 110 for the transfers, slows your normal internet a bit down but I get about 40-50kb/s more using these ports when my ISP is blocking.
You can not avoid it, not even with a proxy because it is the protocols they slow down and not the traffic.
It is very common practice here where I live :(

I have just downloaded the new truck map via file share, which if you use the freebie service takes for ever. Yes torrent files would be much quicker but then you take pot luck as to what you are downloading. A premium account cost £6 for 30 days which enabled very fast downloads. Considering Tomtom are asking £149 for the same thing, I hardly consider paying £6 every six months for the latest maps a great hardship.

The same applies to Zip and RAR files downloaded from file storage sites such as Rapidshare and Megaupload - even if you have paid your £6 for a premium account, it's still pot luck.

The answer is to use a trusted source.

If torrents were created by members of this BBS and available from here, any dodgy ones would be very quickly weeded out, as would the member(s) who posted them.

There is plenty of evidence that files on the major file storage sites are being removed more and more swiftly.

I couldn't agree more.

In the iGO board, for testing reasons the team has published a homemade torrent on a private server. It's a Primo 1.2, complete with nuance voices.
(see some posts up, it's announced in this thread too)

I also noticed TomTom 1.7 Europe, presented on a torrent (here).

Thank you for starting this little experiment. After 7 weeks of seeding (+/- 20GB uploaded) I removed the torrents. If there's need in the future for seeding maps, etc. I would be happy to participate.

I have a massive pipe up and down. i would seed for weeks if needed.

i have been trying to download the newest version of my USA map for my device and it only has 4 files but according to filefactory its going to take me over 8 hrs to download. Not to mention filefactory just reset my connection and i only got 24mb downloaded and now i have to wait ANOTHER hour before i can download more... complete BS :mad::mad::mad:

why pay for the file share page when i can spend the same amount and get the official map.... but since i am on here that means i am not willing to pay.

Logic

I never cease to be amazed, that members, with just 1 or 2 posts, are the ones that do all of the complaining. We've been doing this for quite awhile & do things the way we do for a reason. You have no idea what we go thru, including the aftermath of the megaupload shut down, just to keep the files active for our members.
If you must complain, I prefer you do it on somebody else's forum, not Navitotal.
