Why not torrents?

Why not torrents?

Postby egabrum » Wed May 16, 2012 7:13 am

Probably this has already been discussed, but I can't find any reference:

File sharing servers are VERY slow, you can download only 1 file at a time and links are often broken.

Why don't we use torrents to share the maps instead?

EDIT: OK, I just found the thread "Why not use torrents?".
Too bad that we are not setup to use torrents :(

Thank you.

It never ceases to amaze me, that first time posters have the nerve to complain about FREE downloads.
We didn't just start doing this yesterday. Trust me, we have looked at every option there is, & for one reason or other, none are acceptable.

Yes, I say so.

That file sharing sites are slower is a fact, not a complain. Given that fact, I was wondering what was the reason why torrents are not used. So I asked, not complained. And then I found that other thread, and edited my post to cancel the question. And, yes, I think it's a bummer, but don't complain.

I appreciate your work here, but your sarcarsm is uncalled for.

Torrent = Seeders and there is noone here in the forum that can cope with the downloads over his private line.
It also means sharing, which for the past years seems to be a job of the team but no longer for the users.
If you want torrents feel free to offer the files you downloaded but also make sure the torrent stays alive and will not be replaced by fake files.

Why not use very fast download hosting sites like Mediafire.com? I get over 500 kbs or more per second.

Another option could be the use of hosting sites like:
[Please Register or Login to download file]
...and then members can choose what hosting site best serves them for speeds.

There's no such thing as a free lunch :)

After paying for a year subscription for one of the filesharingservices, its nice to see the Gigabytes come in with 16Mb/s.
Comparing it to a year subscription to tomtom's update service the choice is easy made.
Although I still feel this money should be going to navitotal.
When I have the time available, I will make some torrents of the top 10 maps or so. I suppose the full Europe maps will be in it.
Still, the 100KB/S uploadbandwith I have available, would be like carrying water to the sea.

to be honest torrents are really a waste of time because as already said they need seeders 24/7 and most people do not, they just just leech! Then shut down their client so others cannot share. Even with my 13 mbits of upload i wouldnt use torrents because it would mean leaving my pc uploading 24/7 for the next 10yrs for everyone to come and leech files without seeding themselves (most torrent users are usually pretty selfish in my experience over the years of downloading files).

I am interested though in how many people would like the option of downloading the maps via newsgroups (if you have access of course) see poll here

p.s. sorry for hijacking thread :)

I don't want to get my head blown off here but have usenets been discussed ? no seeds required! I know you need to purchase access but it's only about £7 a month and some isps give free access.
