Updating a TomTomXXL Classic Series

Postby BTC101 » Sun Jun 14, 2015 1:39 pm

Hi,
Just bought a second-hand TomTom XXL Classic Series for road-trip to Canada. Would like to update it with the USA.Canada map (as well as the UK maps if they will both fit so I can test it out)

I've been lurking and trying to find out about updating it so I thought I'd help out by posting my progress rather than just lurking.

Current System Status
The system as it stands seems to work well with its current (UK) configuration. Maps are old but it does work. Battery doesn't hold its charge when off for 5 days - probably on par for its age.

Main Menu>Change Preferences>Version Information
App 9.430.890926.2, OS 842337
(2008, 21/3/2012)
64 MB RAM (free 15.6 MB)
GPS v1.20, Boot 5.5282
Language: English UK

Downloaded TomTom Current Configuration from this Navitotal post : http://www.navitotal.com/tomtom-tools-f127/tomtom-current-configuration-2011-t7501.html
Ran the software from my connected PC and got the following myversions.txt:

TTGO.BIF:
DeviceName=TomTom XXL Classic Series
DeviceVersionHW=ONE XXL Classic
BootLoaderVersion=55282
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=9430
ApplicationVersion=890926.2
CurrentMap=Western_Europe
CurrentMapVersion=885.4053

Upgrade Process
Looked at this post in the Navitotal tutorials section: http://www.navitotal.com/tutorials-f80/how-get-the-right-navcore-and-map-working-your-t14555.html
Unfortunately the "How to make a proper backup" link is dead.

I've downloaded the Universal Navcore installer from here http://www.navitotal.com/navcores-9-for-tomtom-devices-f124/universal-navcore-installer-t14168.html

And that is where I've stopped for now. How am I doing so far? :023: Is the Universal Navcore Installer still the way to go? Is the proper back process up just to copy all the content from the device onto my PC?

Welcome to Navitotal.

1. Good start.
2. No problem.
3. You don't need it. Your 9.430 navcore is fine for now. Let's get your map updated first.
4. Well above average
5. See point 3.
6. Yes.
Due to the small number of usable US & C maps that will fit in your unit, your choices are very slim. USA Canada 1GB 950 6544 is it.
Download & unzip USA Canada 1GB 950 6544.
Download & unzip FastActivate.
Remove your current Western Europe map folder.
Copy in the US & C map folder.
Run FastActivate.exe option 2 to patch the new map & option 3 to patch your navcore.
Disconnect & reboot.
DONE!!

An update to my update.

I wanted to test out the whole process so instead of going straight for installing the new US and Canada map, I went for the version 945, United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland 945 6174 [248MB] - that way I could check out the performance of the system, lane assist, etc.

So as per Tendrivers advice, I didn't bother upgrading my Navcore.
Downloaded the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland 945 6174 [248MB] from here: http://www.navitotal.com/maps-v9xx-f179/945-map-collections-only-t16879.html
Download the Latest v945 postcodes [GREAT BRITAIN, NEDERLAND & SINGAPORE] from the same page.
Downloaded the latest speedcams from here: http://www.navitotal.com/topic6933.html
Backed up the Tom Tom by copying the entire contents onto my PC
Deleted the old existing Western Europe folder.
Copied across the unzipped United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland 945 6174
Copied across to the root of the Tom Tom, the Great Britain Postal files.
Copied across the speedcam files to my new TomTom UK map folder
Ran FastActivate.exe option 2 to patch the new map and speedcam files & option 3 to patch my navcore.
Disconnected from my PC
Rebooted the TomTom and everything worked!

I now just need to do the same process again but this time with a Canada map.

Thanks again Tendriver :023:

Great, but the 945 maps are the older maps which is why Tendriver was pointing you towards 950 series maps as they are the current release.
