TomTom XXL adding maps and updating

is there anyway of making them work together instead of me having to switch maps or is that not possible

Nope, you have to switch only maps covering several countries like the EU maps offer navigating from one country to the other.

I hope you are aware that Eastern Europe [301MB] & Europe East [1351MB] are not the same map
