Is TomTom XL IQ Routes Edition too old to update

Anybody know if it's possible to update this gps with new maps

Yes, it can be updated with a new map but first you should update the navcore to the new official one from TomTom

Do a full backup of your XL IQ & then download and extract the new navcore to your device (overwriting everything it asks about)...then when that is completed, you can look at what map to download
