Problems with updating my TT

Mon May 06, 2019 3:03 pm

Hello Fred

You helped me a couple of years ago selecting a map but since then I have been unable to choose one that will work so gave up till now, sadly I face the same problem. I thought I understood and after you explained it seems very simple but I still can't select a map that will work (I attached my info file at the end).

I'm running v9510 Switch on my old TomTom1.

I first checked on the map comparability page and cross referenced the maps on there for v9510 (I wanted advanced features but really only need ALG on my old TTOne) against the metacode page list and discovered that meta is listed for two maps 1025_9386 and 1025_9432. The 9386 map has ALG so I went for that one. Both are ticked green in the compatibility colour chart against my navcore version and they both appear in the meta list.

I get " United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland-101852.meta => .dct ERROR " when I try to patch the 9386 map.

After some time I found a thread "Re: Attention! Maps 1025 'fornokey' Error!" and tried that but still the same, although it said in the text that the maps usually work anyway, thought it was worth a try before I pester you again.

Sorry Fred, I have tried many times over last two years and didn't like to ask again, it seems so simple yet I can't seem to make it work what am I doing wrong please?

Best wishes, Dave.

Hello Dave...good to see you again

I have no problem with you asking questions mate because that is how we all learn...

Ok, your thinking & procedure above is completely correct but you probably don't realise that FastActivate is constantly being updated with program updates and new meta codes.
If you hit a brick wall and you're convinced that the map is both compatible & has a matching meta code (which in this case it does), your next port of call must be FastActivate.

1. Always download a fresh copy of FastActivate from here
2. Extract it to your device > run FA from there > select option 1 (it gives you a file called 'Updated_meta.txt') > open that file to double check the meta code you're interested in is within
3. Assuming it is...select option 2 to activate the map

Hello Fred, Thanks for getting back. Sadly since trying to patch the 1025-9386 my TTOne has died and no longer works at all. I learnt the hard way with allowing windows to "fix" the faulty drive so assure you it did not, I closed the warning box with the top right corner cross. So now trying to repair it but in a mess as I no longer have the installers for any previous known working maps. So I copied the SD card from my second (still working) TTOne and fitted it to the faulty unit. Now it's the same and seems to freeze, stuck on the accept terms button then if you get past that it hangs on the choose a map stage. My old PC died, I'm currently trying to find all your notes. I have wiped the SD card and started to install the NC 9.510 with swap file, which I have done. That said I have no map to install now so I'm stuck. Te last one I had working on it was 1005-8763 but lost the auto instaler .rar file. So I'm at the stage of installing a map on the new NC 9.510 with swap file system and don't know how to proceed now. I suspect I'm going to create more problems trying to get various old maps I still have installers for to work. I also read a comment you made about not just putting a copy of a working SD card into another device (which of course I had done before I found your files on the old PC) and you mention "Bricking it" not sure what this means but perhaps that's what has happened. Not sure how I proceed now. I can open the new SD card install of the NC 9.510 with swap file but have no map. I also found a program called clear flash. Have you any advice to stop me bumbling on forever? Thanks, Dave.

Oh my gawd...what a mess lol...I've created a new topic for you as there are a few things to do here

Ok, firstly there is a good chance that your TT One's will have a problem with the clock not keeping time...this is due to the chip inside and there is nothing that can be done about it however it will still function correctly apart from the clock...more about that here:

topic21159.html

Lets fix one of your devices first...you've already done the NC 9.510 so all you need is the new map which I've uploaded for you here:

[Please Register or Login to download file]

Extract it to your SD card and then activate it as I explained in the second post above

Hi Fred
To update you - before you replied to my sad text, I wiped the SD card, instaled the swop file, downloaded the new fastactivate (which by the way I did update right away before trying anyhting the first time) then I copied the 1025_9386 to the new install, ran FA as update meta and patch. The map did patch and said OK. So then I tried to start the TT and it hangs terribly on the first page agree to terms. Then it is only possible to get it to open on my PC by pressing the rest in the tiny hole next to SD card slot. So gave up and wiped the card again. Tried to install a program I found on my old system called flash clear and run it but it doesn't seem to make sense, the test says press OK etc but there's no bitton for OK just arrows. I think this was intially from TomTom?

So to clarify, I am now with a wiped card and have run the flask clear twice for what goo it seems to do. Now at the satge where I began, so installing the swop file and map again will just end the same. I need to do something different or pointless repeating the same over and over.

With ref to resets, please clarify - reset in pin hole vs. reset with power on / off button i.e. am I doing something wrong here? I think we need to begin again please. Also consider - is my device faulty? Perhaps it's been damaged by what I have done and is somehow retaining something that prevents it from working again. It seems to be frozen.

Sorry about all this. I'm NOT being funny but I regret ever bothering. It seems I got the map right. The fast activate thing, I only updated it from FA itself, I did not remove, re-download ad replace the program the first time, so perhaps that is why the ap didn't show as patched. Perhaps FA will not actually fully update itself even though I clicked that option first.

Best wishes,
Dave.

Fred, further to my last message, I have updated the other unit I have with the same method as you advised and replaced FA with the downloaded new version (didn't update from inside the existing FA) and it's worked right first time. So something very odd about this other unit. I think something inside it has been locked, do you recall what you meant by "bricking it". Remember before I wiped the card this unit was frozen anyway (after trying to patch the 1025_9386 map) so I thought I had nothing to lose by re-burning a copy of the owrking one on the faulty ones card. Think we need to start with a clean slate and ensure my faulty one hasn't retainede something to prevent it working again. Thanks, hope this makes the water slightly less muddy. Dave.

To clarify...you have 2 x TT Ones, the first one is suspected faulty....the second is now ok

So you are now working on the suspect one which keeps freezing...reset it via the pin hole for an extended time.
Then reload the SD card with the navcore and it should start up but with the obvious error of 'no map found'...if that's the case, now plug it in & load map and activate it.

If the second one is ok, it would make more sense to get that one up & running so you have at least one that works Never mind...you've already got it working

'Bricking it' is a generic term for turning it into a brick/paperweight...in other words 'it's f**ked!'
A previous member of staff used to advise against swapping an SD card from one device to another because there was a danger of bricking it...I don't know how accurate that is though

Re: Problems with updating my TT

OK this is what I have...
Both units were ok before I tried to update the map so I only concentrated on the first one. The first one I tried to patch the map and when I re-started it, it was hanging for ages, then it would go past the accept terms opening screen and open the old map but not respond beyond that. So I thought windows repair fault on drive might have been automatic and damaged the .chk files as I had done once before. I remeber it was easy to copy the card over from the other working unit so that's what I did. Of course I expected it would not like it and thought it would clear after powering up and off again. Then running FA again to sort out the map. But that's it. It never worked again.

I have wiped the card again, reset with the pin hole for 20 seconds. Run the clear flash three times. Re installed the swop file navcore you gave me some time ago. Started the thing up to create the file but already it's not right. It just stops at the do you want to connect to a computer and clicking on yes does noting. Only way to turn it off now is to use the pin hole again.

The second unit worked also, only this one updated perfectly with use of the fresh downloaded FA (as I said I did run the update FA from the program on the other unit anyway) rather than try to use the old FA software to update itself, as you advised and it worked - very simple as it should have been.

So seems I have a faulty unit that refuses to run properly. I did re-format the SD card in it twice by the way. It didn't show any errors, should I try another SD card (empty) do you think? Perhaps the card is faulty.

Thanks, Dave.

Hello Fred

No luck with the new SD card it's exactly the same. After a fresh re-install on a new SD card formatted with a proper SD card formatter the problem remains.

When start the TT the screen from a car window appears, takes a long time to go brighter, then the welcome / accept terms / safety screen opens for Legal Notice then it doesn't respond, tapping the "I agree" button does nothing. If I then plug in the mini USB it does respond with the "Do you want to connect to computer" but again fails to respond to either yes or no options. What I d notice is it appears to be running but very very slow. After tapping "no" for computer, it eventually turned the button blue and went to the Legal Notice agreement page but here it remains.

I suspect there has been a fault that happened at the time I tried to update maps - i.e. the unit is faulty and not related to anything I have tried from Navitotal. The device is doing very odd things now, I tried fitting the original SD card that it came with new and now the screen opens from that even though there's the new boot up screen from the swop file installation. I also think that the flash tool is not working with Windows 10 and TomTom no longer offer it as a download since they dropped the model one support.

I think I will send it away to be repaired. Thanks for your help, I do at least seem to have one working unit. Best wishes,
Dave.

It sounds like it still needs to be reset as the splash screen is still showing from the swap file navcore...your model of TT One has no internal drive at all so it must still be held in flash memory.

All you can do is to hold in the reset pin hole for an extended time / use the clear flash tool Biggerdave has linked you to...or both

Whatever you do, don't send it away for repair...it's very very old & it's value is a lot less than it would cost to repair it. You've got one that works so just use that one instead.

Hi Fred please can you help me regarding a strange problem with (both identical maps and OS) my two TT One v3's. I am running your special 9510 switch file to enable the use of more advanced maps on the basic v3 model. The map is United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_1025_9386. I have two units one is a spare and an exact copy of the first, when I update maps and speedcams fastactivate etc I do the same to the second unit also. The problem happened on both units on different days same journey.

I travelled to a destination 57 miles away, all navigation instructions and lane guidance was perfect. When I arrived I cancelled the route and put the return route home in (as would need to leave quickly) and the red route appeared on screen as ready to go. I turned off. On leaving turned on and the route was on screen and I set off. Shortly into the journey the route turned grey and the location froze and no GPS reception was updating the screen, or rather the screen didn't change, it stayed where it was when it greyed out the route from red. The unit refused to work again and after power down would not switch on, it was completely dead. So the next day had to go again so used the second working TT One v3 and it did exactly the same so not the unit that's faulty hardware wise. I discovered however, that removing the SD card, starting up till it asks for a card, shutting down, re-fitting card and re-starting made it work again. Is there / was there a bug in my map? I looks like something to stop the unit working but it's never connected to TT Home I don't use it, no point so it's not on my machine. Obviously I can't use either unit as no use if it fails when I'm on a journey fortunately I found my way back by luck but was a complex journey so really needed the SatNav.

Hope you can help. Of course I will download the latest advanced feature map but going on holiday in two weeks and so need a working reliable SatNav hence my pestering you. Thanks very much in advance. Dave.

Hello again Dave,

I had the same thing happen once myself and the reason was the map was advanced and the journey was complicated so the TT ran out of memory and rebooted which is what I suspect has happened to you x 2. Although I can't remember exactly, I would've linked you to a navcore 9.510 with an inbuilt swap file that should alleviate that problem however reliability is better than unreliable with bells & whistles.

So with that in mind, I've upload the latest 1050 UK & ROI standard map for you to download [Please Register or Login to download file] . Also inside the map I've included the updated FastActivate so you can activate it.

Thanks Fred as always. Yes you helped me do the swap file (sorry I called it switch file) and it was the 9510 as you said, in fact never had a problem with it since hence wondering if it was the map. It failed in the same place both return journeys but one re-started some time later. But the screen went to grey like when GPS signal is lost and the display stayed on the last known location.

I downloaded map 1050 10186 last evening but not had time to install it yet but thanks for the link I will take a look and if it's not 186 I will use that as know it's right if you chose it, I do still get them wrong sometimes. Only update once a year now as only use for my holidays mostly. Will let you know how I get on but suspect it will not do it again.

All the best and thanks a million your always so helpful and patient. Dave.

Ok, well in truth it could be a couple of things...either loss of satellite signal...or it's running out of RAM (I thought it would be the latter)

Does your clock remain at 0:00? If so, then there is the problem and it's something we can fix.

If your clock is ok, then we have to assume the complicated journey and all of the advanced map features is consuming too much RAM.

Actually, there has been a problem with the FastActivate server over the last couple of days so we have to use another activator (thanks to Holyhead)...the instructions are provided:

[Please Register or Login to download file]

As for which map you use...the 1050.10186 is the advanced map and the one I gave you is the standard map, you can use either as they both have meta codes

By the way, you can thank people by clicking on the thumbs up button on their posts

Re: Problems with updating my TT

Hi Fred

I think I made it sound like the route was very complex, it was simple for the unit, it was me that had the problem as some parts had changed but probably my fault for not updating the map (not anywhere near the crashing of the TT though) however I didn't have time as it was a sudden journey I had to make, which is unusual for me and as I'm still a dummy updating it takes me some time to get it to work. This time I seem to have selected the correct map 186 with advanced features but I only actually need the ALG function.

I looked to me as though the GPS reception was lost and it did it at the same point on both return journeys but not going at the same point on the outgoing journey or else I would have suspected power lines or buildings blocking the signal. Whatever went wrong must have prevented the unit powering on again after turning off as both units were completely unresponsive to power on again till the card was removed, then they powered up and down, refit card and then powered back as normal and functional. But I had to get home so didn't have time to do this on the journey.

Sorry I didn't think to look at the time but will if it happens again but have a feeling the unit had locked up / crashed.

I didn't know how to thank but always said thanks on each reply, now I know so don't need to take up space thanking, which was the idea I guess, sorry!

I will let you know if I have any other problems if you don't hear then all is well and I suspect it will be.

Best wishes, Dave.
