Ok i've had a look around and a lot of people have trouble with heated and UV filtered windscreens interfering with the GPS signal, and also unlocking is possible but not straight-forward, Can't find any info on whether Tomtom works.

i'm glad you told me that, sounds like i'd end up in the same situation as i'm already in wih my navigo V2 with the UV windscreen - no matter - the search continues :)

I still think a Navman S50 or a Mio M series device would suit best, Good reception, Good screen, Very loud speaker, Fast processor, Easy unlock and runs Tomtom 100%

Instructions for Navman/Mio M400

Connect device to PC Device will take a few moments to establish a connection
Browse your device with Windows explorer on your PC and copy everything to a safe location, Don't disconnect yet
Download this [Please Register or Login to download file]
Extract and run Setup.exe, then click Install Desktop
Now you need to safely remove the device How to do this depends on your version of Windows but usually it's done by clicking the icon in the tray, or right clicking the icon in My Computer

Your device will now reboot to a blue desktop with a start button at the top and a Smart ST icon, Tapping this icon loads the original software

Now you need to download [Please Register or Login to download file] (Passwords: navitotal)
And download AutoActivate
And then go here and download your maps be aware that you only have 2GB of storage space, and about 180MB of that will be taken up already

Reconnect your device and copy the Navigator folder to the root of your device
Also copy AutoActivate.exe and your map folder as well
Disconnect your device
Using FileManCE in the Start menu, Navigate to Tomtom Navigator.exe and run it
Tomtom will start and complain in French about not being able to use the maps
Reconnect your device to your PC and run AutoActivate.exe and wait until it's finished
Disconnect your device again
Start Tomtom again and set up everything according to your preferences
For the GPS settings use...
Other NMEA Receiver
Baud: 4800
SirfNavDrv
I think that's how it's spelled :D

Language is on page six of the settings with an icon of some flags

NOTES: Tomtom will crash with an out of memory error at first satellite lock and also it caches all the disk writes, so use the exit option on page three of the main menu after setting everything up to force Tomtom to save the settings to disk, otherwise you'll have to do them again and again and again!

To get a shortcut on the desktop open notepad on your PC and type...

"\My Flash Disk\Navigator\Tomtom Navigator.exe" Which is the path to the executable on your device within quotes
Count all the characters 47 in the above example
Arrange the text like this...
47#"\My Flash Disk\Navigator\Tomtom Navigator.exe"
Save the file as...
Tomtom.lnk That's LiNK not INK
Make sure it's Tomtom.lnk and not Tomtom.lnk.txt
Your PC will hide .lnk so you'll just have an icon called Tomtom
Copy this file to the...
Program Files\Unlock\Desktop folder to have it on your desktop OR Program Files\Unlock\Programs to have it in the Start menu.

To get Tomtom to autostart...
Rename Tomtom.lnk to Autorun.lnk and copy it to...
Program Files\Unlock and Tomtom will autostart when the device is rebooted, When you exit Tomtom the desktop appears.

Also the clock, and thus the arrival time, will always be wrong, just go to status bar preferences and turn them off.

I also had some speedcam upgrades on my old nav, do you know where to put them & if i need to run the autoactivate again afterwards?
many thanks
ps. you were't kidding about it being loud :)

Edit: - forgot to say the time seems to be correct as well

On my Navman units this goes in Program Files\Unlock\StartUp But then TomTom gets the task bar across the top of the screen.

@xted go to the latest map thread and download the latest postcodes, put the two uk files in a folder called zip in the root of the device, speedcams go in the map folder, premium cams will need activating like the map did

@nrt that's where i put mine and it works without the top bar, but it does seem to vary between different models

I'm pretty much sorted now. I think all the cameras & postcodes look like they are working, the only thing not working is the time. (it is 13 hours out) it ran ok for about a day then went out but like you said earlier in the thread, I just turned it off & all is well.

Fatboyfun, thank you soo much for taking the time to help me like that, it's massively appreciated.
This is a cracking forum (pardon the pun) & I'll definately be popping back from time to time to see how you are all doing.

Thanks again :)
