Please tell me if I'm on the right path to upgrade my GO720

Postby Gweedz » Tue Apr 17, 2012 8:41 pm

OK, taking that into consideration I'll start from the beginning:
I had 8.351 and 705.1481 map, worked perfect (came installed that way).
I installed 9.430 through TT Home, and 885.4087 using instructions in this thread. Install went fine (second time around). Without any other changes my quick menu doesn't work, and it doesn't stop routing when final destination reached. If this are basic problems please provide a solution.
I re-installed 8.351 and 705.1481 and everything worked fine once again.
Right now I'm testing with 9.430 and 705.1481 - I'll report tomorrow.

I admit I did a lot of tinkering, but once I saw this caused havoc I started again from scratch making sure to leave everything untouched. I'm not sure what other basics I need to know. Besides my "out of memory" issue which was easily solved, I didn't receive any of the other errors I see all over the board - map not found, etc.

1. Basic knowledge would tell you that testing with 705.1481 is a waste of time, because the map has nothing to do with your issues.
2. With 9.430 loaded, can you put the contents of your internal memory, without the map, in a .rar, upload it & give me the link in a PM?

1. OK was just trying to cover all bases by using a clean/unpatched map.
2. OK I can do that. In the meantime I took some screenshots you asked for. Trips 1 and 2 are of trips I took this morning that didn't stop routing once destination reached. For example in Trip1, the 20 sec, 50m do not change no matter how far/long I travel. When I reached my destination the bottom blue box changed from "distance to next turn" to 2D/3D, which is what it's supposed to do. To remove the 20 sec/50m values I need to cancel the route using the menu.

My quick menu button is working now.

I don't see anything odd in screenshots 1 or 2. Will be able to tell more with the .rar.

Is zipped OK, using 7zip? (I remember reading issues with 7zip unzipping maps)

I ran a couple of short trips with your navcore in my unit, & I did not have the issue that you describe here. Nor did I have it with my navcore. Confirm you are crossing over the finish line banner at the end of the route.

Did you physically drive somewhere, or run a demo on the unit? When I ran a demo it worked fine. If you actually drove and it worked fine, then I'll try installing again - should only take a couple minutes as I'm becoming a pro at this! LOL

Yes, remaining time and distance count down to zero (I even tried stopping for a few seconds to give it time to "register" that I arrived), and then they either remain there if I keep driving (such as my photo Trip2), or it goes up a little and stays there such as photo Trip1. Then it doesn't change no matter how much I drive. My understanding is if I overshoot the destination the remaining time and distance should count up as it recalculates a route to bring me back. This is what it used to do with my first install of 9.430.

1. This doesn't deserve an answer.
2. Once you cross over the finish line banner, & the unit announces that "You have reached you destination" the route is complete & all route guidance ends.

1. Why not?
2. Ok, I don't receive the announcement and the route guidance doesn't end.

In post 53 you indicate that route guidance does end. You can't have it both ways.

Here's exactly what it does, you tell me if it ends or not:

1 Remaining time and distance go to zero (or close to zero) and stop changing value. But do not clear (it thinks it's still routing me).
2 "next turn" box changes to 2d/3d. (as normal when routing ends)
3 "cancel route" button is still active. Pressing the button says "route cancelled". (as normal when routing is active)
4 Voice does not say destination reached. (as normal when routing didn't reach destination)
5 Red "line" on road showin route does not disappear when destination reached. (as normal when routing didn't reach destination)

According to all items except #2 route guidance didn't end. BUT it stops guiding me.

Anyway, I think we beat this dead horse enough - if it were a simple problem or something common that all beginers have then I'm sure you would have spotted the problem right away. Considering you don't understand what I'm explaining tells me it's something very rare, or maybe unique to my unit. Maybe the internal memory is corrupt, I dunno. I'll keep trying different things and if I hopefully figure it out I'll explain how I did it in case someone has a similar issue.

I really do appreciate all your help - you've gotten me this far that I'm sure I would have been much worse off if I did it completely on my own.
Thank you very much! :)

After more testing with my navcore only, the following is correct.

1. This is normal. It does not think it's still routing you.
2. Yes this is normal.
3. This is normal.
4. According to your navcore, your speaker is turned off.
5. This is normal.

Bottom line: your 720 is functioning normally in regards to this issue.

1. Seriously? You're saying it's normal to drive around all day with the GPS telling me (visually) that my destination is 50 meters ahead, even though it's really 40 km back, and I passed it 2 hours ago?
2. I agree.
3. I agree it's normal - if routing is active. But if routing is active then my point #2 shouldn't be happening. If routing is not active then it shouldn't give me the option to cancel routing because once it's inactive the cancel button is grayed out. But in my case it's not.
4. True it was off when I sent you the files, but I also tested when it was on.
5. Again, seriously? So if I route to the store, but not on my way home, it's normal for the GPS to display arrows showing me where to turn, even though the arrows were for my trip to the store? And the only way to clear the arrows is to go into the menu and cancel the route? (Even though you say it does not think it's still routing me)?

Bottom line is it's definitely not normal the way it is now because my previous posts show that the first time I installed 9.430 my only issue was the quick menu button not functioning. It didn't exhibit any of the routing problems I mention above. So I reinstalled 9.430 and maps and that's when I started having this problem with the routing (even through the quick menu was fixed). So my 720 was routing normally at one point - I just need to keep at it until I figure it out. I know it's possible.
I'll post an update here once I've had a chance to try a couple things.

@Gweedz: I'm not convinced that you're right here.
As far as I can remember every (at least) V9 NC shows exactly the same routing "problems" you complain about.
You can also read about that [Please Register or Login to download file] , [Please Register or Login to download file] as a quick Google search would show.
