got one with tom tom on the SD card that goes into the inbuilt sat nav, can they be updated?

Depends on all the same relations like with any other TT:
What Navcore, is it a normal Fat file system on the SD, what map version is installed?
Can you make a working backup of SD onto a blank SD of same or greater size?
