Carminat, share maps with other users

If I understand correctly, the one way to mapshare when using TT live latest version:
1. Buy an official Europe map on SD.
2. Make a full low-level backup of SD.
3. Activate maps on carminat
4. Copy SD card contents to another SD card and keep using that
5. restore SD to original state
6. pass SD on and repeat steps 3-5

Its not the best share ever, but I have a colleague with a Carminat TT live as well, so this effectively a 50% off for me...

It should also include TT Home (patched?) for the map registration (mct -> dct).

I don't know. It sounds more logical to me to have the carminat unit do that by itself. Otherwise, since the DCT makes it device-dependant, how would TT know the carminat device ID? This cannot be automatically done, since TT home can connect to multiple TT devices and to connect 'your carminat unit' you have to insert the currently used SD card contaning the old map.

It seems that the CARMINATE LIVE navcores cannot be patched :( but ....

QUESTION1:
is it possible for an original map on an original SD (which in this situation uses an MCT activation) to change the version nummer?

If that is possible then the following scenario should be possible.

1
Make a low level backup of the original map on the original cd including the MCT activation (MCT is Media Controlled Tagging). Call this setup MASTER1.
2
Activate this map by puting it in the CARMINAT LIVE device. Now a loopdir\loopback.ex3 file is created in which device related information is recorded.
(2.1 finalize the activation using tomtom home if needed).
3
Now the SD will contain a DCT activation (Device Controlled Tagging). This version can be copied to different SD's. So buy a new SD and copy everything to it. Call it WORKVERSION.
4
Use the WORKVERSION in your CARMINAT LIVE device.
5
Copy your backup from step 1 back to your original CD. This recreates MASTER1. (This MASTER1 is now usable in another CAR : simple version of physical sharing!, thanks to bigfoot1942)
6
Wait until TOMTOM offers a new version of your map (maximum 3 month). Record the version nummer of this new map but do nothing else with that map.
7
Wait until TOMTOM offers a second new version of your map (again 3 month). Now we continue the get this map for free by performing the next steps.
8
Take MASTER1 and change versionnummer of the map (@downunder32 can this be done simple, or do we need a kind of keygen for that?). Call this setup: MASTER2
9
Activate MASTER2 in CARMINAT LIVE device. This should update the map in your device (if question1 stated above is answered with yes). Also a loopdir\loopback.ex3 file is created in which device related information is recorded and the date that MASTER2 is first used should be in that file somewhere).
(9.1 You should use MASTER2 for a short trip as it is stated somewhere that a map is marked as being used if you drive at least 30 km/h with it)
(9.2 finalize the activation using tomtom home if needed)
10
Tomtom home should offer you a free map update to get the now current map including a DCT activation.
11
now step 3 until 10 endless can be repeated.

THIS SENARIO IS NOT YET TESTED as QUESTION 1 has to be answered first.
What do the experts think of this scenario.

What version number do you mean?
The MCT activation is bound to the SD CID - the Sid can't be changed.
A backup of a genuine, never used SD, using a MCT could work, but only if the SD was never used in the Carminat or with TT Home.
I say could as the results from tests seem to vary:
Some say their SD with MCT works in at least two different cars, but this goes for a slready "activated" SD.
Others say they tried but the SD was refused.
Same for backup copies, some say they work if the backup was created prior to first use while others say it did not work at all.

There is a lack of strucured testing and a lack of available unused SD's.
Biggest problem is that usually a new owner only comes to a forums once the GPS was used, rendering a "clean backup" impossible.

My current DCT map is BENELUX V900.4611
I suggest to change that map that it looks like a (non existing) BENELUX V900.4612. Without any DCT/META change. We could test whether it would be loaded but we finally need to test if it can be done on a MCT version.

True. I expect that TT Home as well as the CARMINAT LIVE device changes the MCT to DCT although nowhere the exact moment of change is discussed.

I think these report are false because they probably are old and before we had the general knowledge of the two different type of activations (MCT/DCT). I also thought of the following: If the CARIMINAT does not change the MCT to DCT but adds a loopdir with internal some DCT data then we have three type of cards: pure MCT (no loopdir), MCT with DCT-loopdir and DCT with DCT loopdir. There could be some confusion on that.

I'm willing to do some more testing. By know I have tested that it is no problem using a lowlevel backup (using xcopy) of a DCT SD (of 2 GB ) on a FAT32 formatted Kingston HDSD (4GB).
I'm willing to try using a fake BENELUX (V900.4612) map from answer 1 but I do not know what I need to change to prepare it.

Indeed, this also holds for me. My current BENELUX map is already in use.

I'm not shure if you always will get an MCT-activated card if you order a new SD from your car dealer. Spending about 100€ for a map if I would know that I could keep upgrading it could be overcome, but spending it for a single not upgradable card is quit a lot.

1. won't work
2.
3. only more user reports can tell
4. go ahead and try what you can, at this time there are not many users doing testing anyway
5. only if someone with some knowledge decides to buy a new SD it goes on, used SD's wont really help IMHO
6. AFAIK only the car dealer gives out SD's with MCT, same for new cars, ordering through Home will give a DCT bound to the device ID and not a MCT

Hello,
Tomtom has released the 9.465 version of Carminat Live which is apparently the same version as for the GO X20,30 et 50 series !
May be we could analyze the carminat version and the GO version to hack the product !!

You can download the [Please Register or Login to download file] and before you do anything with the new SD you create a backup with this nice program.
It will be like an imga file from your hard drive.
Use Winrar to compress the image, upload to a filehoster of your choice and past the download link here.
If you add the region (e.g. Europe, Italy, Spain...) in the posting other user will know it and might try so we get proper feedback.

Try following the procedure I posted a couple of pages back. You will need another Carminat to see if you can activate from the SD card again after restoring it, and if you can keep running from a 'backup copy'.

That won't be a problem, if he does the backup before use and uploads it I'm sure there will be enough Carminat users her willing to test it ;)

Is the ID of the original 4E0D-F1F7?
Did you only copy the files from the original to the PC or did you use a backup program like mentioned in post #116?
Does the map use a .dct or .mct for the activation?
