Look for the cheapest model you can find that came out before 2010 & has:

1. At least a 4.3" screen
2. At least 64MB RAM Memory
3. At least a 2GB internal memory
4. A SD card slot

1. No, do not buy any of the GO X10 models. They don't meet the minimum specs in post 2. Look for a X20 or X30 model
2. Born in April 2006. Current navcore is 7.903, which is irrelevant. Yes, easy to update.

IMHO it also depends what the user is doing with it and what area is needed for the map.
As an example the AU maps here are less than 200mb and I know many people that are happy with their old ONE or XL models.
But when it comes to hardware features and tweaking the last of a TT than of course only a x20/x30 is the right choice. And I agree : no 630, they are always tricky to get going.
Navcores and maps are no problem anyway, but for Live services the best option is a X40 device, although I think the live services are a bit overrated.
In terms of avoiding I should mention that most ONE and XL models after 2009 can make problems with the sound and/or missing menu options when using a modified Navcore.

I too was in the market for a change 2 years ago, went for a TT720.
Just replaced the battery, can do anything with it, even urban rider on it for when i'm on the HD.
Am seriously thinking of getting a 920 as a back up, before they go altogether.
You can get a refurbed model fairly easy at the minute.
