4GB SD Cards (non-SDHC)

Fri Sep 10, 2010 8:20 pm

Hi - Anyone had any experience with these? As the older TomTom's accept SD but not SDHC, this left me wondering if a 4GB Non-SDHC would work. Trying to find them is a little like searching for rocking-horse manure, but they are out there... question is, would it be a way to increase my GO510's capacity without resorting to some drastic surgery? :focus:

I have located a couple of these cards and will post the outcome when the mailman finally brings them, but wondered if anyone wants to spoil the surprise?? In a similar vein, when TT get around to SDXC compatibility, won't it make life (and maps) interesting!

He has upped to 9.205, so he should be set to use a SDHC card.

Since I doubt that you jest ... the tennis player in me says "you cannot be serious?" ... sdhc support is navcore driven?

Actually bootloader 5.5015 supports SDHC cards (8GB and higher)

It is "driven" by the bootloader, which is a part of every navcore. Bootloader 5.5015, which is in navcore 8.300, supports SDHC cards (8GB and higher)

Thanks for this. I am puzzled though - I have navc 9.205.547817.1 OS 547200, with Boot 4.8600 - clearly not in the range of Bootloaders that will support sdhc. Are you suggesting I go back down to 8.300 then re-install 9.205 ? Bootloaders do not down-grade, am I correct in that?

A bootoader is a small program that places the Operating System files, (the Navcore) into memory.
A TomTom is basically a computer, and When turned on, the input/output system (called a BIOS on a PC) performs an initial test, then starts up the bootloader which is stored on an Eprom chip.
Its only job is to load all the necessary imaging and operating files of the navcore into memory.
Also known as an MBR in Windows or a LILO/GRUB in Linux.

NAVCORE VERSIONS:

5.5259 (GOxxx)
5.5256 (GOxxx)
5.5229 (Goxxx) - RECOMMENDED BECAUSE IT IS TESTED AND STABLE
5.5136 (One/XL) - Suggested
5.5128 - RECOMMENDED
5.5112 - Support for all TT and MicroSD/SD over 4GB
5.5015 - Unknown
5.5022 - Fix a writing problem over > 4GB barrier
5.5012 - Recognize SDHC (> 2GB) on TT ONE
5.5001 - Unknown

Bootloaders that are standard in TomTom official Navcores

5.5120 GOX20 - GOx30 - GO7000 - TRUCK
5.5136 One/XL 2008 - One/XL 2009
5.5138 XL 2009 Live
5.5256 GOx50

Instructions

Connect TT to a PC
Back-up your TT in Windows explorer
Copy the new "system" file to your navcore root
Shut down
Disconnect from PC, re-start your TT
Wait for it to rewrite the eprom
Your new bootloader is active

NOTE: You do not have to replace the navcore to upgrade the bootloader, as has been advised in various other posts.

WARNING: USING THE INCORRECT BOOTLOADER CAN BRICK YOUR TOMTOM !!

@NRT : before you post links to other forums, which is agaist the forum rules that you read and accepted you should at least consider using what is available at NaviTotal!
Like : Bootloader 1.xx and Bootloader comparison
Why do you think we post all that?

@Macca-009 : Use this bootloader 5.5128 :
1373

Unpack the archive and copy the file "system" to the root of your device - confirm overwrite.
At the next start you will see a multi-language scrren that tells you to wait - that is the install of the bootloader, don't interrupt it or switch off.
When finnished you will have full SDH support.

By the way : SD standard is only up to 2GB, 4GB cards are not included in the standard and might not work in every device.

I suspect your bootloader didn't change because you used the 9.205 basicpack, which doesn't have a bootloader in it. Bootloader for this navcore is 5.5250. It is attached. Unzip & copy it to your 510.

Only because I didn't find it here. I didn't see any reference to another site in what I ended up posting. Sorry.

No hart feelings here, justsometimes it is easier to check the tutorials than posting a link that is not working because of the rules ;)
If you have the problem again it might be easier to copy and paste the posting and to leave a note who wrote it originally.

In the autoinstallers there is no bootloader (system) file included, this is because i used basikpacks in the packaging of the files and they do not contain bootloaders, so you still have your old bootloader, if you want the bootloader from 9.205 download the .cab archive.

Thanks for that - I had already been to the SD Association's site for verification of the format and although it is confirmed as practical, the quality of my purchase remains to be seen, hence my original question. To now learn what I have regarding the bootloader (which I had previosly recognized as the equivalent of a bios) and that it can be further upgraded beyond the last 'official' version for my TT, is a revelation in itself. I had not considered the scenario of the b/l providing the sdhc compatibility, anticipating instead that it would require a hardware change.
Thanks to all for your input - I am no stranger to burning new bios's and am well aware of the risks involved.

I now have one further question though: it is quite common for the need to follow an upgrade 'path' in getting from version A to (say) version D, possibly requiring the installation of 'B' or 'C' (or both) along the way. Does this apply to going from my existing B/L to 5.5128 ?

I should also add at this point that I had previously tried to search the forum for references to this this subject with no success - probably just me being useless at searching forums! Once again guys you have the deep admiration of an old-timer with grand-kids who are probably older than than some of you! - Thanks go to all ---- Macca
