TTS on Android

Sat Mar 02, 2013 3:53 pm

I installed one of the iGo on my Android phone from one of the thread here with TTS. Everything works except the TTS kind of soun funny. For example, it pronouns "recalculation" as "re-call-culation". If I remember right, there is a file on my Mio C310x that fix stuff like that. Is there a similar file for Android? I am using US English.
Thanks.

No, the TTS is handled by Android, you can play around with the text in the voice file.zip, but pronunciation is down to the TTS engine in use.

I have found on my Android phone install, under the TTS engine settings on the phone you can adjust the TTS speed. When i adjusted the speed faster the words came out a little smoother. But on the generic 7" android tablet I'm currently playing with in the truck... increasing the tts engine speed did not improve the tts speech. They are both using the same TTS engine. Try increasing the speed and see if it improves the performance.

I installed SVOX Grace US English, and it works much better.

I noticed there are several programs that use the TTS engine without any pronounciation problems.
This let met beleive that there must be files similar to the phoneme files directing the output.
Assuming this is correct it shold be possible to either edit those files or to replace them with versions that are more complete or better in terms of pronounciation.
I just got my Android pad today, so in next few eeks I will do some testing and tweaking of programs and if I find something of interest I will post it.

One more thing about TTS. If I select Susan, all the instructions starts with "volume = 100...". Samantha doesn't have this issue.
