Pros and Cons for Buying Garmin LifeTime Map Update

Pros
1. Four fresh new maps updates per year
2. Notification of new maps when available
3. Firmware and support files download to device
4. The price of LifeTime maps has dropped to $54
5. Can be purchased by online map code or map update card

Cons
1. Older Garmin units may not have enough internal memory for new maps
2. For some GPS units you will need to purchase 4GB SD memory card
3. Down loading large maps files will take lots of time
4. This map update only can be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your Garmin device
5. The GPS must be registered in your name (INPORTANT)

Tips before purchase
1. Log onto your Garmin account and confirm the GPS is registered in your name
2. You will need a fast internet connection
3. 8GB of free space in your computer
4. Take time to read the comments from those that have purchased this product, it’s cheaper to learn from others mistakes then make them your self

Deal Breaker for me
1. My nuvi 1300 was purchased pre-owned and not registered in my name
2. The LifeTime map update is for US & Canada only, I must have Mexico maps included
3. The unit is 3 years old and needs a new battery before buying LifeTime map update
4. My StreetPilot 2730 has no SD Card slot and a slow CPU processor for today’s maps
5. My StreetPilot III can only use None-NT maps

Comments
-For me it may be better option to purchase a new GPS unit with lifetime maps and traffic and use the older units for backup.
-For those that have GPS unit with Europe and North American maps you can purchase LifeTime maps for these units.

There was a huge sale here last year and all units that were current at that time got the lifetime maps included.
Not just Garmin, also Navman, Tomtom and some less known brands.
I only checked for TT and they were about 20% cheaper with the map updates compared to the same unit without.
So it might make sense to take such an offer and to sell the old device.

For your information:
If you buy a Garmin device that includes lifetime map update (devices with LMT in name), you needn't to register neither yourself nor your device at garmin.com!
You can connect your device with Garmin Express or Garmin MapUpdater and update it anonymous. You also can sell this device and the buyer can use the update service like the first owner.
