New to Garmin: Please help me with route transfer

Postby theWolfTamer » Sun Oct 03, 2010 4:40 am

Just downloaded Garmin Mobile XT for WinCE 5.0 to use on my HP Ipaq HX2190b. I purchased igo8 last year and like it but I wanted to try the Garmin software since most of my motorcycle riding buddies use some type of Garmin.

I think I've got it installed correctly, it finds my BT GPS receiver so I know it is unlocked. I installed the basemaps to use while waiting for CN North America to download and created the unlock file that I'll need once they are installed.

I want to transfer a route I created using ITN Converter that I intend to share with my motorcycle companions. I installed Basemap and Mapsource and used the options to send to the SD card, however when I go to look for the routes, they don't show up in XT. I can see the .gpx and .adm files called userdata.

When I open the .gpx file in ITN Converter, the route is there. It's just not under Tools--Manage My Data--Routes. How do I transfer a route to my sd card?

Also, Mapsource doesn't show a map when I open it but Basecamp does. What is the difference between these two programs? Which one is the best to use to create/transfer/share routes?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

First of all, you used wrong Garmin XT ! Your device isn't on Windows CE platform, your device is Windows Mobile device! That version which you used is fro Wiindows CE devices!

check [Please Register or Login to download file] specification of your device.

Remove that Garmin XT installation for Win CE devices, from your device. And go to Garmin software section, then find Garmin XT for Windows Mobile, there you'll find all necessary files for installing on WM devices, like Garmin XT for WM devices, free base map installation, and garmin support files installation - where are lang files etc.

Next step after appropriate installation, find unlocked .IMG file fro Norh America in Garmin map section, and then just copy-paste to your SD Card in Garmin folder where will be Garmin installed. Or if you install Garmin on internal memory, then make Garmin folder on your SD Card and put there map .img file of NA.
I'm all what I'm not!

I downloaded and installed the file(s) you suggested. They work too and have been unlocked, however I still can not transfer routes from BaseCamp or MapSource.

I followed the tutorials for transferring routes but when I go to Tools--Manage My Data--Routes, there is nothing there. The .gpx file is on the card in the \Garmin\GPX folder.

They aren't unlocked! You have to unlock Garmin Mobile XT for Windows Mobile, find CARD ID of your SD CARD, go to settings, then ABOUT, there you'll find CARD ID if you have sd card on your device, or something like software unid ID: , that's depended of device to device..

Whe you find this Card ID number or software unit id, use garmin jetmouse keygen from software section, put there this ID number, select Garmin Mobile XT and generate unlock key gor Garmin Mobile XT for WM, copy - paste that unlock key in notepad document, and save as SW.UNL, for type select ALL, created sw.unl file copy-paste in Garmin folder.

I don't use basecamp, you can transfer files with mapsource, firstly you have to unlock maps in map source, then you'll be able to transfer them to your device. If you read my answer with attention, you'll see in previous post, answer on your question, find unlocked map .img file and copy-paste it in garmin folder! Please read with attention!

Unlocked maps .img of North America you can find on link bellow

I have not installed the locked map files yet, just the unlocked ones.* I've already created the .unl files I will need once I get the files downloaded and can copy them. Those files are in the \Garmin folder.

Right now, I'm simply trying to transfer a route that I received from a fellow motorcyclists to review.

It just occurred to me: Do I need to wait until the maps are unlocked and installed before I can transfer a route? Can you use a route with just the basemap?

* The ones you linked to are the ones I am currently using.

That's ok, unlocked .img file to garmin folder on your device, sd card or where you have free place about 1GB. You need to have installed and unlocked maps in mapsource if you want to import route which your friend sent to you, that's .gdb file, which simply import over menu - file, then open, and you import on this way route file.

No , you can't if that route is created on NA 2011.20 maps!

If you want to use maps and to review route in Mapsource, then you have to unlock NA 2011.20 mapsource version, you can do on more ways, search in garmin section to check for garmin maps unlock tools, like garmin unlocked, garmin alternative unlocker, etc.

NA 2011.20 and all other newer maps, change structure and way of installing, and to use garmin unlocker, you have to use Map Reverse Converter tool (google for it), to convert maps for older type of unlocking with garmin unlocked, and to send them on C:\Garmin instead of Application folder of OS, after reverse converting maps and sending them in C:\Garmin , you'll be able to use Garmin Unlocker to unlock mapsource version, after unlocking you can use them in mapsource...

p.s.
yes , you need to have unlocked maps, and then to use gpx file - gps exchange file for routes, waypoints , etc.

I am having trouble determining which files are for mapsource. All the files I've downloaded are .img files, which I understand mapsource can't read. I found a method to make them readable in mapsource but that method is not recommended. Is this what you referred to when referred to the reverse converter tool? Is that the only way to get the maps for mapsource?

Where are the mapsource maps? What is the right extension? I think I've downloaded mapsource three times now! I must be getting so confused because I am new to the garmin software and what's right for each application.

At this point I'm tired of trying to figure this out. I understand that Basecamp reads all the .img files but doesn't have the function I need. Mapsource doesn't read the .img files but has the function I need.

Thanks in advanced for your patience and answers.

I'm getting frustrated with Mapsource!!:girl_cray:

I've got the maps downloaded. Turns out I'd already downloaded the locked ones. I put them in ...\Garmin\Map and used the unlocker and got them unlocked I guess. Open Mapsource, still no @#$%! map. :wallbash:

Did I put them in the right place? If they are still locked, they won't show up right? I will replace the locked ones with the unlocked ones, just want to be sure I'm putting them in the right place.

That's not way to put them in C: \Garmin and to be unlocked :) that's not like you though simple with newer maps like 2010.20 NA, for older maps installing was in C:\Garmin, now garmin changed path for installing mapsource maps, and garmin unlocker is developed for old path, that's reason why they aren't unlocked, for changing path for newer maps you use Reverse converting maps tool , and after converting maps to C:\garmin folder, you need to unistall NA 2011.20 from control panel, add/remove, or program feat in win 7, and then use garmin unlocker for unlocking mapsource maps...

Did you download mapsource unlocked from my previous post, or? Like i told, unistall all what you have installed, mapsource version, download unlocked mapsource version of NA 2011.20 , and install it, and you'll have unlocked maps in mapsource which you can use them, and where you'll be able to import routes, waypoints, etc.

I used jdownload to download the link you posted but it is asking for a password when I try to unrar it. I've re-read your post a couple of times but can't find any mention of one.

If I understand correctly, uninstall the old mapsource then unrar the download from the link above and then install mapsource from that?

I got the map to show up in Mapsource using the locked maps and the unlock process.
1701

I opened the route, recalculated, then selected transfer to device. I got a message saying everything transferred BUT when I go to Tool-Mange My Data-Routes there's nothing. Under "My Locations" all of the waypoints for the map are there.

17021703

I also transferred the maps with the route.

Here is so much speaking - complications to help you on this way, it's dificult to help you if i don't see directly whole situation, like i wrote you before... First of all like i can see you have installed 2011.10 maps, was that route from your friend created on same map set 2011.10 or 2011.20 ?

Another thing, what file your friend sent to you, .gdb, .mps, .gps or? And most important thing is what's his version of NA maps ? You talked something like that you used some ITN converter, for what ?

What's his device, some WM device or Garmin Nuvi pna?

The route is for me to send to a friend, not from a friend. I used .itn converter to create the original route for igo8 using a .kml file. Then I exported it as a .gpx and opened it in Mapsource. My friends have Garmin Nuvi and Zumo gpses, I'm not sure what maps they have.

To send them a route, do I need to get the same maps that they have?

If I understand correctly, the problem with my route is it was not created with Mapsource. I should re-create the route in Mapsource. Once I do will it then transfer to my wm device?

Are you saying route information is dependent on the map set and without the correct map set that information can not be shared? What if my friends haven't updated their maps since they purchased their devices?

Wolf you mixed so much things here, here isn't guarantee that tool itn converter can make compatible .gpx route, which firstly was created by igo8! Then , firstly, stop that combination some external tools, etc. etc. igo8, etc. Simply, use Mapsource, Create some route with it, export it like .gpx - garmin exchange format, and then just send to your friends, they will have to copy-paste it in gpx folder inside main Garmin folder, that's all. Thing can be simple, if we want to be simple! Don't make unecessary complications :) !

Normally, isn't that logic :) ? How can you send some route from CN 2008 to CN 2011.20, if on that route some thing are changed! Better way is to create with MS, you can export it like .gpx and send to your friends. I don't know, simple test it, and you'll see, if maps are changed, .gpx will not be ok for their mapset, the best is that all you friends use same mapset like you!

Then, help them, to update maps, you can find all staff here, maps - unlocked, etc etc.

I think enough talking for this by me ;)
