[Solved] Migrating maps from 64st to 66i

Mon Jan 02, 2023 9:21 pm

Hello people,

my dearest apologize for asking this question -- I was unable to find definitive answer on it .. I know it somehow worked in past but I am not sure if this will work with 66i

I am long time Garmin user .. I use currently GPSMAP 64st and I've bought several expensive maps in past (TOPO TransAlpin+ PRO Summer/Winter, topo Great Britain PRO, topo Norway Experience PRO + few more) .. I am absolutely disgusted by Garmin's business model based on robing on their customers .. I am not going to re-buy all maps again, that's sheer robbery ...

Will I be able to somehow transfer maps from my 64st to 66i ? I have all my maps on dedicated SD card in IMG format .. in Garmin folder .. I didn't buy yet GPSMAP 66i but I am considering to do so because of that satellite communication ability ..

thank you very much in forward ..

cheers, ~dan

If you buy maps on SD cards from Garmin they can be used on other devices as they are unlocked to the SD card, if you bought by download for a specific device they are unlocked to that device ONLY.
The maps you have can be unlocked, but to use them on a GPSMap 66i the device will have to be patched to use unlocked maps.
Check your PM.

for the sake of God ... as I am digging further I am more and more confused ... I've found for example this

[Please Register or Login to download file]

which costs (only) 20 euros .. is it some scam or what's that ? I own this one [Please Register or Login to download file] which is for 150 euros and it has even worse coverage ...

can somebody tell me what is the difference between the map from garminworldmaps.com Vs the one from *official* garmin.com ??? if the map for 20 euros will work for me, I'd go with it ...

thanks much, ~dan

resolution comment: GarmanNuvi pointed me to the article about patching Garmin device to use unlocked maps + to gimgunlock utility .. we had also a sideways communication and it turned out for me that I will go better with sticking with with my current GPSMAP 64st because I don't have any issue with it and for satellite communication feature (peace of mind for my family) I can separately buy InReach mini, which will give me more flexibility in exchange for +100 grams of weight and it will also save some $$

thank you guys very much for your support !!!
