Garmin nuvi 255w Time updating

Postby pablocat » Fri Sep 18, 2020 5:14 pm

HI,

I have a Garmin nuvi 255W satnav unit that was bought recently from an electronic surplus store with the original software installed. When I checked the time displayed, the unit showed that it was 1 hour behind than the current time. I am in the Eastern time zone. Also, the World Clock time for different countries was also off, and the date showed January 30, 2001 a couple of days ago.

I have updated the unit via Garmin Express to the latest software version and the time still shows to be 1 hour behind and World Clock has not changed. The only workaround I have found for the time was to uncheck the Automatic Time Setting and manually set the time to the current, but no workaround for the World Clock problem.

I have checked the Garmin website but with no luck. I have also seen this problem on another forum with no fix.

Is there a fix for this Garmin unit? Does anyone have any other ideas?

Obviously you have allowed it to get a full satellite fix and you have the latest Time Zone map v24 installed (gmaptz.img)?

Try a reset

Hi GarminNuvi,

I have tried to get a full satellite fix and the time zone map (gmaptz) is updated to v24. This unit doesn't have the option to set the Time Zone setting as shown above in the jpeg. World clock is still showing incorrect time for other countries.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Older devices effected by the GPS Week Number Rollover

Postby GarmanNuvi » Sun Sep 20, 2020 1:09 am

Garmin GPS Week Number Rollover Statement
What is the GPS Week Number Rollover (WNRO)?

The GPS system is world-renowned for its ability to provide accurate and reliable positioning and timing information worldwide. The GPS satellites transmit to users the date and time accurate to nanoseconds. However, back in 1980, when the GPS system first began to keep track of time, the date and time were represented by a counter that could only count forward to a maximum of 1024 weeks, or about 19.7 years. After 1024 weeks had elapsed, this counter “rolled over” to zero, and GPS time started counting forward again. This first rollover occurred in August of 1999. The second rollover will occur on April 6, 2019.

Is My Device Affected?

For many years, Garmin has anticipated and prepared for this event. Regardless, Garmin has been performing exhaustive testing of current and legacy devices to determine if they will be affected by the GPS week number rollover. Our testing shows the vast majority of Garmin GPS devices will handle the WNRO without issues.

What is the Effect of a GPS Week Number Rollover Issue?

For GPS devices that are affected, after the rollover occurs, an incorrect date and time will be displayed. This incorrect time will also be used to timestamp track logs, compute sunrise and sunset, and other functions that rely upon the correct date and time. However, the positioning accuracy will not be affected. The device will continue to deliver the same positioning performance as before the rollover.
