Garmin BlueChart to GPSMAP541s

Postby 2eight0 » Sun Oct 27, 2013 1:33 am

Good evening everyone,
I have used the search function over the last 2 weeks and I think I have to much info running through my brain now. I purchased a Garmin 541s running 4.40 firmware I believe. I have alot of knowledge with the Garmin Mobile XT stuff on my antique windows mobile phone, but 0 with this new Marine GPS. I haven't been able to locate any instructions or tutorials or steps on how to go about putting some maps from the map library section of the forum.

Heres what I've got. sorry for my lengthy post but im a sucker for detail.
I downloaded Vus006r, Vus007r quite some time ago which is what I used on my HD2 Garmin xt device.

I loaded both these maps one on different occasions today one at a time onto a 4gb SD card

Opening "HomePort" on my PC and inserting the SD card into the sd reader on my PC I am able to see both the maps and what I believe to be all the details. It's much more detailed than the what I would call " BaseMap" in homeport.

When I look under "Charts" in the top menu bar and click "manage them" I see Vus006r under status it says "Not Lockable" so im assuming the mapsets I have are Unlocked.

BUT

I put the SD card into my GPSMAP541s it loads up and flashes the mapsets upon startup It will show the Stock Basemap, and the Map on the sd card. It loads everything then a screen comes up " Unable to unlock maps" ! I click ok and it loads whatever it loads. Under "system info" it lists my mapset as supplemental. What does happen though it unlocks a few new options under ":Charts" like the fisheye 3d and a few others I no longer have it in front of me. of coarse im doing all this on my workbench with a power supply so i cant confirm if the function actually workes. It did bring me to a diffrent view of things on the screen but not sure it functioned.

I got my unit ID off the unit and it also puts it on the SD card. I thought maybe the map wasn't unlocked so I created a Txt file (mapsupp.unl) with the info I got from the jetmouse keygen. after entering the mapset # and unit#.

I also created a merged mapset using GMAP tool. I clicked the buttons to leave the mapset unlocked but still end up with the same result. the GPS tells me Maps not unlockable.

I feel like I have everything intact im just missing one stupid step. or maybe the downfall of a downloaded map is that lousy screen about the maps not being unlockable. Im hoping the map isn't unlocked or I did something wrong. I dont notice any change in detail in the Cheasepeake bay. I sure would be upset if I paid full price for the mapcard and didnt get any more detail on the map than whats on the stock mapset.

Did you download locked or unlocked versions of the maps?
If you downloaded locked versions, how did you unlock them?

Try gimgunlock to unlock the maps (again). An .unl file with JetMouse generated key is useless, since maps with mapID >2200 are not unlockable this way.

I can't recall if the maps were locked or unlocked and I don't know how to tell. It was a torrent I d/l 4 or so years ago. according to homeport they arent lockable. I tried searching the site for the two maps vus006r, vus007r I was looking for and couldn't find them. From a simple search i found The map ID for vus006r cheasepeake bay is 232.Thats way less then 2200 if im reading the > correctly. I will D/l gimunlock and give that a shot. I Thankyou for your timely response im sure we can get it figured out.

Then this is another case - maybe the maps are to old for your device or the unlocking wasn't good.
Try to unlock with gimgunlock again.

But I strongly recommend to use a newer map. Use the [Please Register or Login to download file] page to find all Maps for the required area and then look here, which of these maps is available in version 2012 or newer. For Chesapeak bay are these e.g. US038R, US511L and US512L.
VUS511L in version 2012.1 we have >>>here.

welp! I used gimunlock and it worked like a champ!!!!!!!!! I will definately be checking the new maps at this very second.
Vus511L would work perfect for what I was looking to do. I tried 7 of the links and none seemed to work. So back to the drawing board.

You should ask the uploader per PM to renew the links.
