choosing an old but reliable Garmin

Postby harrygee1205 » Sun Sep 12, 2021 7:47 pm

Hi
I have been using Tomtom satnavs for a while but I want to try a Garmin.
Can someone suggest an older model from a couple of years ago that I can pickup on ebay at a reasonable price that is reliable and could be updated using this website?
Any suggestions welcome
Thanks

Can only assume an automotive device because of your Tom Tom XL 30 series activity here?
My choice is the [Please Register or Login to download file] . On Ebay $40 or less. Advanced Series Navigation, so packed with features ,has Lifetime map updates and does not require firmware Patching to use Unlocked maps
[Please Register or Login to download file]
or the later model with built in traffic receiver I would buy.

Hi
Thanks for the reply ; there seem to be a few around on the ebay UK site for me to choose from at a reasonable price.
I guess it must be a model from several years ago based on the asking prices!
I have updated maps and navcore many times using this website for my TT but never had a Garmin before
so I guess its back to school to learn how with Garmin
I have always had a love/hate relationship with my XL v9 ; it has a habit of losing signal as soon as I get in a hire car in the US which is not ideal and I dont want to play the lottery every time I arrive at an unfamiliar airport!

Backup the device onto my HDD

Postby harrygee1205 » Sat Oct 02, 2021 6:11 pm

Hi
I now have my nuvi 2595; it works well and the NA map above works fine when installed onto an SD card
One of the first things I want to do is backup the device onto my HDD. I have opened the nuvi in file explorer win 10 and see the Internal Storage folder with folders inside which I guess I just need to copy and paste onto my HDD
Can someone tell me the location of the Europe map file which was installed on the device when I received it?
I have looked around the folders in Internal Storage and it was not obvious to me where the map files are
thanks

Backing up your device is a good idea after you have used Garmin Express to make sure it is up to date, Maps & software. If space is an issue on your HDD no need to keep D6210180A.img or gmapprom.img 5.15 GB as these change & can easily be downloaded with GE
In the system folder on your device & is a hidden folder, change your PC to show hidden folders

Hi
thanks for the info ; I do have "show hidden files/folders" selected and space is not a problem
So are the 2 .img files you mention the Europe map files?

what class of SD card is OK?

Postby harrygee1205 » Tue Oct 19, 2021 4:36 pm

Hi
Can someone tell me if a class 4 SD card is of adequate speed to use with a Garmin GPS?
I have a 32GB class 10 card and an 8GB class 4 card and would prefer to use the class 4 card as it has enough memory for my map and the 32GB would be wasting a lot of space and I could use it elswhere
thanks
