Missing Torrents [SOLVED]

Sun Jul 05, 2015 12:39 pm

Aloha !

Here a small question from a warm Holland.
Why are the downloadlinks on this forum hardly ever, just say never, in torrent form ?
The downloads here are via obscure files sharing sites that are :

  • Slow as heck
  • Split your download up in 17 pieces
  • Allow you to download only one file in an hour
  • Links are taken offline while I download 4 of 17
  • Give 404 errors halfway the download
  • Sometimes need bloatware-download-programs
  • Rar files give errors (CRC-errors) while unpacking
  • Rarfiles need unknown passwords (yes I tried : navitotal)
  • And sometimes riddled with virusses

What is up with that ?
Torrents are basically the opposite of the mentioned list above ?

Real world example. I spend almost AN ENTIRE WEEK just trying to download the Android version of TomTom with no luck at all. Finally I started Googling, found a Torrent and after about 30-40 minutes I had it working on my phone...

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers

You forgot : want you to solve puzzles and riddles.
On the negative side, torrents need seeders, thus a change of attitude from most visitors on this forum.
And on the positive side for torrents : rarely die like the "normal" links that are often dead after a few hours or in the best case, after a few days.
Just do a forum search, next to a million thank-you posts, one finds thousands of re-upload requests.

@ jecepede,
Thanx for your concern & suggestion. katastrofe has brilliantly answered your question!! His 1 item, on the negative side, negates any & all items on the positive side.
This having been said, if either of you have a strong desire to post torrents, do not let me deter you.

Aloha !

Thank you for your answers..

It may be my English, or lack of, but I feel the question has not been answered at all.
At best, katastrofe supports my point ?

As for seeders, I think that is a strong point. As long as people want to share the files you will be able to download.
I recently downloaded some old maps for a Mio P350 (for Mio Maps 3.2). The torrents still worked, the download links did not.
Just like katastrofe said "one finds thousands of re-upload requests".

And even if something is not seeded, it usually is ancient maps one does not want to download anyway.
No point in installing 835.xxx on your TomTom Start

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeers,

Though not meaning to be brilliant, only critical to the users :

katastrofe wrote:On the negative side, torrents need seeders, thus a change of attitude from most visitors on this forum.

But followed by the why torrents should be posted after all:

katastrofe wrote:And on the positive side for torrents : rarely die like the "normal" links that are often dead after a few hours or in the best case, after a few days.

An example: [Please Register or Login to download file]

Look at the first entry, Primo 2.4 - 9.6.13 uploaded 2013, 145 seeders, the second one 67 seeders.
And that is only on that one torrentsite, there are many more.
But how many seeders are visitors on NT? Few to none, I can imagine.

I even found an iGO8 uploaded in 2009 (!!) seeded by 6. Normal links have all gone soon after upload, surely within 6 days, but this one lasts 6 years already.

So on other forums the users (like nyky) post torrents. Why not post them here as well? The more they do, the more the material will be seeded and the longer it will stay alive. No more postings like the uploadsite leads me to malware (search.php : 134 hits!)
On the downside, the uploadsites won't make money, nor will some uploaders.

We have been doing this for quite a few years. We know what does & what doesn't work for us. If we had positive results from torrents, we would make them available to our members. Or members would make them available to the members.

katastrofe wrote:So on other forums the users post torrents. Why not post them here as well?

You will have to ask our "users" that question. Navitotal does nothing to prevent anyone from posting torrents.
From post 3: This having been said, if either of you have a strong desire to post torrents, do not let me deter you.

Never the less the users ask for torrents from time to time (search found 167 matches including 14 from this thread)
So I understand torrents are not forbidden, only that users themselves (in general) don't support (seed) torrents (enough).
However that is contradictory to those 153 matches from the search and the one search on PB.
Maybe you could set up a poll?

I get to have the final word. Torrents don't work for us or our members. However, if you have a strong desire to post torrents, then post them to your heart's content.

Aloha !

Thank you for the interesting vision on the "torrent vs link - issue".
I guess this is what it really boils down to :

tendriver wrote:If you have a strong desire to post torrents, then post them to your heart's content.

If I have anything to share, I will make sure it will be a torrent.

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeers and thanx again,

Jecepede

PS: Just to illustrate :
I spend since the beginning of my post downloading : Europe South 950 6548 [1502MB]
These are 7 rar-files. This morning (TWO days later) numer seven was ready,
started unpacking.... CRC-error in rar-file-number-5.

Searched for a torrent, I now have a working map.
Took me about 15 minutes to download....
