I was able somehow to download ftr maps for Europe. My Mio C310X using iGO8 has US & Canada maps with fbl. So, the Spain map does not work for me. Where would I get maps that work? What should I be looking for? Thanks

The .ftr are no maps but truck files only, useless without maps, which have the .fbl extension.
Now, you have downloaded what where from? You have a bunch of posts in a thread about how to unrar map files. What did you download then?

I am not sure where on this Forum I downloaded the truck files. I found NYNY's "Recent Post" with Europe downloads which I am in the process of downloading now. I also found an older Spain .fbl file that I put into my GPS. It is rejecting it as an IO Error Map\Spain.fbl (0,0/4) I shall remove the file and put in the new file I amd downloading from NYNY and see what happens. Do I need Basemaps?

Basemap has the main purpose to show country borders. And it has some effect on colors. But that is all, so you do not need it.
On the other hand it is one of the smallest files. Better leave out DEM (and buildings) because they are more "looks" than useful.
