Question about TTS for Android

Thu May 08, 2014 9:14 pm

Because I updated my phone's firmware, I have to install iGo all over again. I installed the one from android-apps-f172/primo-383117-android-for-israel-t15437-30.html since it looks like a very recent one. The app works but I have no TTS voice even though I have Google TTS on my phone.

Re: Looking for an iGo version for Android that has TTS...

Don't know what the issue is...
If I select Google TTS, no TTS in iGo.
If I select Ivona TTS, no TTS in iGo
If I select SVOX, TTS is available in iGo.

I used this latest map version.
http://www.navitotal.com/android-apps-f172/igo-primo-israel-390522-apr-2014-t12449.html

I also had problems getting TTS working. After resetting my Android and having to reinstall IGO from scratch. The default I had working in previous version was PICCO TTS which comes bundled with the Android.

I ended up having to install IVONA TTS and a localised IVONA voice file from the Google Play Store. Then enabling it under Android Text-to-speech settings.

Also check that you have a TTS voice file installed in the IGO>Content>Voices folder and that there is a TTS section something like the following in your sys.txt settings file.

[tts]
automatic_direction_conversion=1
announce_exit_directions=1
always_say_road_names=3
announce_street_name=1
skip_exit_numbers=1
tts_buffer=131072
tts_logics=3
priority="HIGH"

I do have those lines in my sys.txt.

Under IGO>Content>Voices folder, I have
Voice_TTS-loq-eng-us-f1.zip
Voice_TTS-loq-eng-us-m1.zip
Voice_TTS-nua-eng-us-f1-lua-dri40-vssq5f22.zip
Voice_TTS-nua-eng-us-f2-lua-dri40-vssq5f22.zip
Voice_TTS-nua-eng-us-m1-lua-dri40-vssq5f22.zip

IF SVOX is available in IGO then looks like it is set as Default TTS engine in Android.

Try changing default Engine in Android setting to one of the other listed options such as Google or IVONA in settings.
Make sure a TTS voice language file is installed on the Android. Not just the TTS voice file for IGO.

Yes, I have US English voice installed for Ivona & SOVX. For Ivona, I have IVONA Kendra. For SVOX, I have Grace. If I set Ivona as TTS in my Android system setting, no TTS in iGO. If I set SVOX as TTS, I have TTS in iGo but Grace sounds very bad both for iGO and other TTS apps.

Try this voice with svox.
Also delete any .ph files (if any) from content\phoneme folder.

Thanks but I can't stand svox. It sounds really awful both inside and outside of iGo.

Try a different version of Primo, seems the Israel version is a bit hit and miss with TTS

Do you have any recommendations?

You will have to search yourself, but you need to know the resolution of your phone.

I installed 9.6.29.331894 (Sep 20, 2013) and TTS seems to work with the default Google TTS. The user interface looks dated when compares with the Israel version but at least it is usable. Will give it a spin tomorrow.

speak too soon. TTS was available first time I start iGO. TTS no longer available when the app starts again.

I dont think it has anything to do with your iGO version myself.

That svox voice I gave you sounds excellent with Victoria svox.

Are different languages available in android voice input and output settings. Try en_us or en_au if available then select listen to a demo at the top to see if they work.

Try editing the actual voice.zip file and look for these lines to read:

tts_langname="en-GB"
tts_engine="android"

As previously mentioned remove any phoneme files, I was suprised what a difference this made.

If all else fails then try uninstalling your tts voice engines and try installing this one. It looks a bit complicated but works just fine.

How do I add this to my phone?

Another issue. None of the POI is showing when I do find->find place->around here (or any other option)->list all places.
