GPS Android Tablet

Postby italianomale » Sat Apr 14, 2012 1:52 pm

Hello all.

I am new to GPS and Tablets.

I am asking a question for a friend. Would I be able to put GPS on her Android tablet and use TomTom or Primo2?

She would need to access using G3? She would need a GPS tracking device? Can you download such software?

Thanks for your help

Yes you can but your tablet must either have a GPS chip for access or an external GPS antenna. Those are not software but actual hardware.
If it ain't broke don't fix it!
ALWAYS BACK-UP YOUR FILES/FOLDERS BEFORE MAKING EDITING CHANGES!

Please do NOT post any thanks. Simply press the hand icon with the "thumb up" which is the thank you button.

Thanks for your reply.

So, if you had the internal chip there would be no need for external antenna?
If you have no chip you could say use an usb antenna? Then its just a case of installing TomTom or Primo2, or both?

No.
You must use applications designed for Android. Forget about any Windows-based software or TomTom.
There are a number of Android GPS Navigation applications, but you must be sure of the hardware...if there is no internal GPS chip in the device, no GPS software will install or do any good.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

Thank you. I thought you may have to use specific android software. I will investigate and ask her some more questions about her tablet.

You (or her), if not sure whether a GPS chip is present, can go into Settings>Location and Security. If there is no category to enable called "Use GPS Satellites", then there is no GPS chip present.
Of course, this ability would be mentioned in the specs or manual for the device---if no specific mention is made for "GPS" (a rather important selling point for some), then chances are there is not a chip and it will have no navigation capabilities. BTW; if a GPS chip IS present, you generally will not need any kind of external antenna. Just like any GPS device, it only needs a clear view of the sky either in the open air or through a car windshield. Not having some kind of dashboard/windshield mount would be a bit inconvenient however if the intention is to use it in a vehicle.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

Yes,from what you said I assumed that if there was a GPS chip present you would have the same capability as any GPS device. Thank you very much for your help and advice.
