Put unlocked map on device internal memory or SD card?

Postby onroad037 » Mon Feb 02, 2026 11:41 pm

HI, everyone, I just used the patched firmware 6.8 on drivesmart 51.

I tested out the unlocked NZ map (just the img only) by putting under Garmin folder on the device.
And the unit can see the map and do simulated routing.

I see many folks mentioned putting unlocked or third party map on SD card.

Which way is better? For me I think using its internal memory will cause fewer issues like SD card failure?

Thank you.

Often there is not enough storage on the internal memory for additional/supplemental maps and their additional files. AU/NZ is only around 1Gb but you are using up the storage for you pre-installed maps which are growing every update.
Also I recommend using an SD card not the internal storage as if you get a corrupted file on an SD card you can just unplug it and start again.
If a file is corrupted and installed on the device you can end up bricking your device and recovering it is a much more involved.
