Global Locate for XXL540

Postby bondy99 » Tue Sep 02, 2025 6:21 am

Greetings,

I have been having issues with my XXL540 device.

Yes, I know it's old, but I have updated to the latest TomTom Australia Map.

The problem is when I try to update the QuickFixGPS diectly, I get the following message

Get update for the Global Locate and SiRFStar-III chipset.
(repeat every 5-7 days for actual data and to fix the WNRO bug)

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.26100.4946]

Start direct download from the Tomtom site . . . .
The system cannot find the file specified.
Could Not Find D:\ephem\*.cab
Extracting QuickGPSFix files to D:\ephem
Error: QuickGPSFix files are not accessible on the Tomtom site!

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.26100.4946]
'wget.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
GPSFix files not accessible on the Tomtom site.

When I use the TTActvator and the FastActivate program, I always get the message unknown chipset.

Sure, QuickFixGPS can get updated using those tools but when I try using the GPS device for navigation purposes, The map more or less freezers and still waiting for valid gps signal for at least 2 hours, then I say, stuff this and switch it off.

Lucky for me I knew the directions to take as I've been to that location before.
I was road testing the map.

Anyone know what the cause could be and how to resolve this.

Thanks

It's a weird error as the device has either a Global Locate or the SiRFStar-III chipset but not both.

I'm assuming you've installed the latest 9.541 navcore and you're using a windscreen mount so in theory the XXL can see the satellites?

If that's the case then it's sounding a bit ominous because that points towards a hardware issue. I'd try a hard reset by either a pin hole or by holding down the power button until it reboots and see what happens. If nothing then you'll have to reformat the hard drive to FAT32 with something like SDFormatter or SD Card Formatter and reload the navcore etc.

Hi fredderf.

Yes, it is weird. I ended up deleting the contents in the ephem folder then used TomTom Home with my NAV2 device connected. I managed to download the latest QuickfixGPS. then I opened up the ephem folder and seen that it as "cbee.cbee" CBEE File / ee_meta.tlv TLV File and ito DAT.

It now says GlobalLocate chipset.

I still get the "waiting for valid GPS Signal"

I'll do a hard reset if I can find the pinhole

And reinstall the Navcore 9.541 file

So what happened? Did a simple reinstall fix it or did you have to reformat the drive before the reinstall?

I ended up doing a complete slow reformat instead of the quick format of the gps device.

I then found my other spare XXL540 that had a new battery soldered into the motherboard as the connector where the battery plug goes into was damaged, the three pins were bent beyond using it.

I tested that one to see if it worked correctly and yep it did.

I copied all the contents of that device into a different folder as a backup.
I then copied the backup files onto the reformatted gps device.

Tested it, came back as cannot use this map.

I connected it to pc to gain access to the device and used TTActivator to Activate it. I thought I already done that earlier.
Disconnected and connect device through mains power via usb.

Went to the car, connected device and yep, went through all the normal start up screens and map loads, sees the satellites within couple of minutes. The only hiccup with this one is that you never get the screen "Do you wish to connect to computer. Yes / No"
It bypasses it and goes straight through to the pc.

I know it's battery needs replacing as it's not holding charge. Whether that's contributing to that hiccup is unknown. I'll know if it was when I put a new battery in it in about 3 to 4 weeks.

That was quite the process, just as well you had a spare laying about...a new battery won't cost much to replace

Anyway, good job on the fix, your explanation might help someone else in the future with the same problem.
