No 2GB map limit on older models?

No 2GB map limit on older models?

Postby Pingouin » Thu Jul 31, 2014 7:56 pm

All,
Just to let you know that despite reading numerous posts here warning that older Garmin models have a 2GB map limit, I installed "Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2014.40" (the non-unicode version) which is 3.06GB on my Nuvi 200, and everything seems to work fine (except the unit runs out of memory when planning very long trips, i.e. UK to southern Italy or Poland, but planning UK to southern France was ok).

Granted, I used WebUpdater, and I've got the following latest versions installed:
Software Verion 5.10
Audio Version: 2.30
GPS SW Version: 2.90m

So I'm not sure why even recent posts still quote the 2GB limit for older models.

A lot of users reported problems with map images > 2GB on nuvi 200, 250, 350 and comparable devices.
Do you have tested the address search function as well?
Some users told us that they can use the map but it would not be possible to search for addresses.

Yep, address search works for me. I just planned a short 200 miles trip within UK, and a long trip from UK to southern France, and I was able to find both addresses (in UK, using either address and postcode).
Maybe it was fixed in v5.10, although that's not on the changelog. Also my memory card is a Sandisk 4GB class 4 (so since it states speed class, I assume it's SDHC).

FYI
There is confusion about the 2gig limit. The term "Older MODELS" is 2 subjective. The problem is with "Specific" models only identified by Garmin. The 2xx models have never had an ussue.

Here is a cut paste from the Garmin site.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
06/13/2011
Starting with the 2011.30 version of City Navigator Europe NT, the map file size for all of Europe is now larger than 2GB in size. The following is a list of Garmin's older model unit's that support a SD Card larger than 4GB but are not able to use a Map file that is larger than 2GB.
o nuvi 300 Series
o nuvi 600 Series
o nuvi 5000
o StreetPilot c500 Series
o OEM Zumo Series
These units will not be able to use the following products:
o Full Coverage City Navigator Europe pre-programmed card
o Full Coverage City Navigator Europe Download
o Full Coverage City Navigator Europe Map Update
o A map file larger than 2GB loaded from MapSource or MapInstall

Ah, thanks for the clarification, that's helpful!
